The Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences has a reputation for world leading and internationally excellent research which was firmly established in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). There, three of our subject areas, Communication, Cultural and Media Studies; Psychology; and Social Work and Social Policy and Administration, had research rated as being of world-leading or internationally excellent quality in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

Developing tomorrow's researchers

The Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences' Graduate School provides a focal point for the management and support of our PhD and Professional Doctorate programmes. Research students who study at LSBU become a vital part of our dynamic research culture and are one of the essential elements which make London South Bank University (LSBU) an exciting intellectual environment.

Our expertise

Research students benefit from our extensive research expertise which is organised within the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR), formed in 2009. Its four research centres are:

These centres are now driving forwards our research activities and profile. Our interdisciplinary research draws on a range of subject, methodological and theoretical expertise. We offer research supervision in a wide variety of subject areas, within the broad areas of education, media and culture, psychology and social and policy research. The Faculty also has recognition from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for PhDs in the areas of sociology and social policy.

Professor Ian Albery's European Research Advisory Board funded investigation
draws together methods from social psychology and psychopharmacology to identify the relationship between alcohol intoxication, expectancies and behaviour.
Professor Andrew Dewdney's AHRC funded project
explores the role museums play in the lives of ethnic minority students, in collaboration with Tate Britain and Wimbledon College of Art.
Professor Ros Edwards nationwide study
exploring how parents in mixed race, ethnicity and faith families understand difference and attempt to give their children a sense of belonging.
Professor Lucy Henry's ESRC and Leverhulme funded work
looking at how children with developmental disorders (language disorders and intellectual disabilities) cope with high level thinking and reasoning tasks
Professor Stephen Lerman and an international research team
looking at ways to enhance the mathematical learning of Aboriginal children in schools in Kimberley, Queensland
Dr Anna Reading explores the evolution of mobile phones
to find out how much the use of this 'memobilia' for personal use has emerged through public social networking websites and the mass media.
