Our values

The centre's research work is supported by our Department of Education's common commitment to equality, diversity and sustainability and aims to engage with education at a local, national and global level, representing the department's values as a whole. Its research contributes to developing education practice and theory in education and also to educational policy. Much of the centre's research is of national and international significance and its profile covers all sectors and phases of Education.

The PhD and Professional Doctorate in Education play a key role in the centre's cutting-edge research, as can be seen in its research seminars, workshops, reading groups and conference participation.

Our mission

Through our research work, our mission is:

  • to engage in research that focuses on issues that impact on policy and practice
  • to contribute to shaping a more equal, just and sustainable society
  • to raise the external profile of educational research and expand the research portfolio within education

We will do this by ensuring that all staff have access to resources and opportunities to research areas of their concern and interest. Also by fostering collaborative ways of working and supporting all colleagues with respect to research.

Management and Organisational Structure

The centre is managed on a day to day basis by the Head and Deputy Head of the Centre. Each research group is led by experienced researchers. Under this leadership each group has responsibility for:

  • research mentoring of staff within the group
  • organising a research seminar for internal and external colleagues at least once a year
  • developing research bids and enabling and supporting the publishing of staff within the group
  • supporting conference attendance at relevant national and international conferences
  • developing supportive research activities e.g. reading groups

The leaders of the research groups together with the Head and Deputy Head of the Centre form a Management Committee that meets once a month.
