The work of Barney Townsend derives from his participation in sports, specifically kite-surfing and paramotoring. In addition to being a member of the British Paramotor Squad and a qualified kite-surfing instructor, Barney is director of Synapse Designs Ltd. This university spin-out company designs and manufactures kite-surfboards that incorporate bi-directional hydrofoils.
His on-going theoretical research in fluid dynamics and Robust Design techniques is applied to the design and development of these hydrofoils. Barney also investigates alternative and sustainable propulsion technologies to develop environmentally friendly paramotoring equipment.
