The RAE takes place every five or six years to assess the quality and significance of research at LSBU and all eligible UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The results determine the annual allocation of the Higher Education Funding Council's £1.5billion research budget.
The results of the RAE 2008 contained excellent news for the Faculty. We were assessed across three areas, social policy, psychology and communication, cultural and media studies. As a Faculty a total of 34 staff were submitted to three Units of Application (UoAs). The Social Policy submission was very successful out-performing all other UoAs submitted by the University. 95% of overall activity was deemed internationally recognised, internationally excellent or world leading and 15% of activity was rated as world leading being ranked 1st for post-92 universities.
Both the communication, cultural and media studies and psychology submissions were the first of their kinds made by the University and both were extremely well received by their assessment panels. 75% of overall activity was deemed internationally recognised, internationally excellent or world leading. In media, a further 15% of activity rated as world leading. Psychology submitted 70% of its staff with 70% of the work deemed internationally recognised or internationally excellent.
Not only does this success emphasise the solidity of the Faculty's research base but also that achievement follows strategic commitment and long term investment.
