Sustainability

At London South Bank University (LSBU), the future is always on our minds. Our teaching is about creating the best prospects for our students and our research is about developing future knowledge to benefit all. And for many years, we have taken this thinking to its logical conclusion by committing to sustainability and the future of the planet we all share.

At LSBU sustainability is not just about reducing the size of our carbon footprint but about driving sector-wide environmental change.

We are committed to minimising our environmental impact and have numerous measures in place to improve biodiversity, reduce waste, encourage sustainable transport and engage staff, students and the local community in sustainability. LSBU has a dedicated team within Estates and Facilities who lead on the organisation's work towards a sustainable future. To contact the team and find out about initiatives email sustainability@lsbu.ac.uk.

Sustainable Development Group

LSBU has a Sustainable Development Group (SDG) made up of volunteers from across the university including support staff, academics and students. The group's purpose is to drive institutional change and support the university's sustainability agenda. SDG aims to increase the environmental awareness of our staff and students and to promote the University's contribution towards sustainable development through curriculum, research, energy and environmental management, governance and stakeholder engagement. To find out more or to join the SDG contact sustainability@lsbu.ac.uk

Getting involved

Sustainability is everyone's responsibility and everyone can take simple steps today to help LSBU become a sector-wide leader for sustainability:

  • turn off lights when leaving a room. It is thought unnecessary lighting accounts for 15% of usage so switch off and save money
  • turn off computers monitors when leaving your desk for more than 5 minutes, this will not affect any work you are completing on the computer and will reduce energy use. Remember to turn off computers at the end of the day
  • reduce, reuse and recycle at LSBU. Use the recycling bins provided on site and reuse items where possible this not only helps the environment by reducing waste going to landfill but saves valuable resources.
  • purchase Fairtrade produce. LSBU stocks a wide variety of Fairtrade produce in all of its catering outlets.
  • get on your bike, walk or take public transport to get to LSBU. We have excellent cycle and public transport facilities on site
