We welcome school and college groups to visit us at our wonderful campus for a taster dayOur workshops are designed to provide your students with an exciting insight into university life. We can offer a wide range of information, advice and guidance sessions, giving students the opportunity to experience what it’s like to go to university. Your students will meet staff and current students, immersing themselves in LSBU life for the day.
We also host student groups for subject-specific workshops across our academic Schools. Our amazing academics run some fantastic interactive sessions, in which learners can find out more about the courses on offer and can get excited about the prospect of studying here in the future!
Both options sound good? We are happy to combine an IAG session with a subject-specific workshop, ensuring your students can explore different subject areas and discover what university life is like.

Biomedical Science Workshops | Identifying Disease in Blood | In this activity, students will be observing different blood smears under the microscope, identifying and measuring different blood elements using different magnifications, and observing diseased blood smears. |
Creating a DNA model (suitable for Year 7-10) | Students will participate in extracting DNA and creating a DNA model. Your students will also construct a DNA double-helix model and be able to gain a better understanding of why this structure is essential for cell division. | |
Forensic Science Workshops | Forensic Fingerprinting Evidence | In this session, your students will learn about identifying their fingerprint patterns. They will also enhance some invisible finger-marks using forensic chemical enhancement techniques and solve the cold case ‘whodunnit’ quiz. |
Forensic Drug Analysis | In this chemical detective workshop, your students will learn about and use different forensic analysis techniques to identify types of chemical evidence. They will use presumptive testing kits to indicate the nature of the samples and confirmatory instrumental analysis to confirm the identity of the evidence. | |
Crime Scene Investigation | A crime has been committed, and Scene of Crime Officers have been called to the scene! In this practical workshop, your students will process the crime scene in our crime scene flat and record and recover the forensic evidence. (Only available in Semester 1: Sept-Dec) | |
Forensic Bone Analysis | Students will find out about the role of the Forensic Anthropologist and how they identify victims from skeletal remains. Learn how to determine the sex, ancestral background and age from the skeleton. Analyse bones in a case study and solve the criminal investigation. | |
Sports and Exercise Science | Field and Laboratory Fitness Testing | Fitness assessments are a series of tests that measure an individual's physical fitness level across two broad areas: health and skill-related components. In this session, students will build on the knowledge developed from their BTEC studies and explore a range of field and laboratory-based testing protocols |
Sports Nutrition | A workshop on nutrition focusing on energy and the macronutrients linking to BTEC Unit 13 ‘Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance’. This workshop is interactive and students will learn about the importance of nutrition for sport, and what each nutrient does in the body | |
Bespoke Workshop | The Sport Science course team can put on a bespoke event tailored to the needs of a school/college's curriculum. | |
Psychology | Psychology, the Brain and Forensic Psychology | Our session will cover two broad areas of psychology: psychology and the brain, and forensic psychology. Students will be exposed to concepts related to the study of the brain and how visual illusions can inform us about our perception of reality. They will also learn about the contribution of forensic psychology research to areas such as deception detection and police interviewing. |
Baking Science and Technology | The Story of Sourdough | In this workshop, one of our expert lecturers will talk your students through the history of sourdough, the ancient old method of breadmaking that is rising in popularity. This talk will demystify the process of making your own starter culture, and how to prepare this for making your own bread at home. |
The Story of Chocolate | In this workshop students will learn about how chocolate is produced, starting with cocoa beans and ending up with a bar of chocolate. How is the soft, luxurious and delicious flavour and texture of chocolate created? During this session, students will be able to taste chocolates from different origins, with different flavour profiles. | |
A Food Safety Mystery | Students will learn about food safety and the risks around poor food hygiene. How can you keep food safe from spoilage and people safe from allergic reactions? Students will also learn to spot food safety risks like a food safety detective. | |
Pharmaceutical Sciences | How pills dissolve in the body | In a class demonstration, the teacher will place different pill types ("chalk" pill, gel pill, and gel tablet) into separate glass beakers of vinegar, representing human stomach acid. After 20-30 minutes, the pills dissolve. Students will observe which dissolves the fastest, and discuss the remnants of the various pills. |
Drug Emulsion | In this lab, students will mix polar and nonpolar substances and then add various emulsifiers to encourage the mixing of the two substances. They will use ingredients in salad dressing to relate science to real-life scenarios. Participants will test a few common household ingredients to identify the most effective emulsifier for making salad dressing. | |

Pre–16 events
We’re happy to welcome students in Key Stages 3 and 4 to our campus to give them a taste of university life – it’s never too early to start thinking about their post-18 options! Our interactive workshops aim to inspire them to aim higher and get excited about their future educational options.
Please see below the activities we are offering for this academic year.
In this interactive workshop, we will introduce your students to the different academic and social aspects of university, giving them a glimpse into the range of subjects and universities on offer, and showing them that university is more than just a degree! Your students will then work together to design and present their ideal university, getting them thinking about what they value in a perfect institution. Our current students will also be on hand to answer learners’ questions and show them around the campus they call home.
We may also be able to combine this with an academic taster session, to give your students even further insight into the world of higher education. See the subjects listed above and let us know if you would like to discuss.

Our on-campus IAG workshops are designed to support your students and raise their aspirations by providing them with the tools they need to progress into Higher Education.

Are you looking to introduce your students to university life? Eager for them to understand the benefits of higher education and for them to get excited about their next steps? During this on-campus day, learners will gain an insight into what it means to go to university and why it might be the right choice for them. We will focus on the reasons students might choose to go to university, how to choose a course and university, and will hear from our student ambassadors in a campus tour and Q&A.
This is a great introductory session both for students who are new to the concept of university, and for those who are still deciding if higher education is the right pathway for them.
Depending on the year group of the learners, we can also incorporate some UCAS application support into this session.

We want students to be aware of all the higher education options out there, so this workshop will provide them with the clarity and insight that they need to make an informed decision about their university applications. We will compare undergraduate degrees and degree apprenticeships and explain their respective costs and benefits, so you students can feel more confident in choosing the right route for them.

This workshop is designed to support those students who may be shortlisted for an admissions interview or audition. It will develop their understanding of how interviews work, as well as providing advice and guidance on how to shine. Learners will have the opportunity to practice their skills and receive tailored feedback, so that they can perform to the best of their ability at interview.
This day can also include a campus tour and the chance to meet our current students, who will share their application experiences and their top tips, helping your learners to ace their interviews!

Visit us to give your learners the chance to experience student life at LSBU, and to build the key skills they will need to succeed at university. We will deliver bitesize sessions on budgeting and how to improve their study and revision techniques. Your learners will also tour the campus and meet our current students, giving them valuable insight into real student experiences and allowing them to imagine themselves in our students’ shoes. This interactive visit will both support students in their current studies, and will help them aspire to their next steps with confidence.
