LSBU courses make UK top 10 in Guardian rankings

15 September 2026

Five subjects at London South Bank University (LSBU) have been named amongst the top 10 of UK universities in the Guardian University Guide 2027.

LSBU is top 10 nationally for Chemical Engineering (seventh), Forensic Sciences (eighth), Drama and Dance (ninth), Social Work (tenth), and Film Production and Photography (tenth) in the rankings, published on 12 September.

The latest rankings come after LSBU again secured its position for its graduates’ earning power. They are the highest paid of all graduates from London modern universities, one year, three and five years after graduating, according to Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data.

Central to this success is the opportunities students enjoy through the University’s CareerSmart programme. CareerSmart builds professional experience into our courses from day one, with expert 1‑to‑1 advice, workshops, networking opportunities, personalised skills trackers and even AI-powered CV support offered to all students.

As part of their Design Project module, final-year Chemical Engineering students at LSBU showcased innovative solutions to real engineering challenges through presentations.

But this wasn’t just an academic exercise - industry professionals from Worley, BP, Kedrion Biopharma, Verdi Energy Services, AkzoNobel and the Institution of Chemical Engineers were there to challenge their thinking and give feedback. Experiences like this bridge the gap between university and industry - something students say is essential.

Student Thishuri said of this session: “You realise that employers value more than just technical skills - they look for communication, teamwork and adaptability. [The experience] showed me how chemical engineering applies to real-world and societal challenges. I want to pursue a career where I can use my knowledge in industry.”

Forensic Sciences at LSBU is the first undergraduate forensic science course in London to have gained professional accreditation from The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (CSFS). LSBU works closely with the Metropolitan Police Service, City of London Police and various forensic science providers to support graduates into roles with employers such as the emergency services, government agencies, medical laboratories and pharmaceutical companies.

Topping the rankings among London modern universities

Several UK top 10 subjects at LSBU also topped the rankings among London modern universities, including Social Work, Chemical Engineering, and Drama and Dance. Other subjects leading the way among London modern universities included Biomedical Science and Health Professions.

For Biomedical Science student Phoenix, practical assessments provided the opportunity to develop hands-on laboratory skills and apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios. Through a placement year and professional experience, she built the confidence and expertise needed to secure an NHS role after graduation.

She urged other students take advantage of LSBU's facilities, practical learning opportunities and placement opportunities: “These experiences can help you build your CV, develop workplace-ready skills and gain valuable experience that prepares you for your future career,” she said.

Social Work students at LSBU must complete practical placements to enhance their skills. The University’s professional connections with several London boroughs and voluntary organisations have helped past students secure placements with the likes of local authorities and housing services, St Mungo's, Mind, Age UK, and Victim Support.

Student Nana said: “My placement helped me gain the experience I needed by providing hands-on opportunities to work directly with individuals facing homelessness... [it was] invaluable in shaping my career goals and solidifying my commitment to making a difference in the community.”
