Where are you from and which course did you choose to study?

After dedicating nearly 14 years to the British Army as a Combat Human Resource Specialist, I embraced a new chapter during my final two years in vibrant London. This journey not only deepened my understanding of human resilience but also fueled my passion for helping others in the community.

The teaching on the Master's in Social Work course at London South Bank University was incredibly engaging and thought-provoking. The lecturers brought a wealth of experience and knowledge, often sharing real-life examples that made the theoretical concepts come alive. Their passion for the field was clear, and they fostered an open and inclusive environment that encouraged dialogue and collaboration among students and I felt nurtured and inspired by my lecturers. They were approachable and genuinely invested in our learning and development, often providing personalized feedback and support. Their dedication motivated me to dig deeper into the subject matter, and their encouragement pushed me to think critically about my role in social work. Overall, the experience was both enlightening and empowering, equipping me with the skills and confidence needed to make a positive impact in the community.

Why did you choose to study your subject area? Why did you decide upon LSBU?

I had the invaluable opportunity to serve as part of the British Army welfare team for over two years, where I was dedicated to helping soldiers and their families transition smoothly into civilian life. My role involved providing essential support across various aspects, including education, employment, healthcare, housing, and a range of social services. In addition, I had the privilege of working closely with soldiers facing post-operational stress disorders, coordinating their medical appointments and crafting tailored support care plans to meet their unique needs.

These profound experiences ignited my passion for social work, motivating me to pursue a Master’s degree in the field. I chose London South Bank University, renowned as the top institution for social work in the city, and it also conveniently aligns with my home base.

Putting my experience to good use

As I pursue my Master’s degree, I am eager to apply my practical experience in educational settings, placement, and community projects. I aim to develop effective strategies for helping diverse populations, particularly those overcoming trauma or adjusting to new circumstances. My goal is to create impactful support systems that empower individuals to thrive in civilian life. Ultimately, I am committed to using my background to foster resilience and facilitate positive change in the communities I serve.

Have you done a work placement or any work experience?

I did my first placement with a homeless charity called St Mungo’s. St Mungo’s is a charity and housing association that works every day with people who are sleeping rough, in hostels, and at risk of homelessness. They aim to end homelessness and help people rebuild their lives.

My placement helped me gain the experience I needed by providing hands-on opportunities to work directly with individuals facing homelessness. It enhanced my understanding of the challenges they face and allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in real-world situations. This experience has been invaluable in shaping my career goals and solidifying my commitment to making a difference in the community.

What kind of career would you like to move into or area would you like to specialise in?

I’m interested in moving into a career that focuses on social justice and helping underserved communities in Adult Social work.
