Explore the English Legal System, as well as practical, transferable and legal skills and legal theory essential to effective engagement with your legal studies. Discover and discuss theories of what law is, the court system, and the personnel involved in the administration of the law. You will also encounter and develop a range of skills, including study skills, research skills, deriving law from primary sources and explaining, discussing and applying it, and researching, using secondary sources, written, communication and IT skills and reflective learning.
Discover the nuances of contract law and how it governs the world around you. This is your introduction to contractual liability and the workings to the law of contract alongside the underlying legal, social and economic policies which are relevant to it. Contracts are a central component of civil liability within the English legal system and are foundational to UK society, economic activity and commerce. Almost all UK citizens form contracts almost every day they govern our work, our housing, the purchase and sale of goods, the supply of services, including basic utilities such as gas, electricity and water.
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to Constitutional and Administrative Law, exploring the legal framework that governs the relationship between the state, institutions and the individual. It considers how state power is produced, shared and limited. You will cover the foundational concepts that underpin the state governance and state-individual relation. You will examine the fundamental structures of the state; the principles that maintain the balance of power, and the mechanisms available to hold public bodies accountable.
Level 4: Semester Two
In a society where technology is advancing, how can the legal system keep up? In this module you will study at the intersection of law, justice, society and modern technology, focusing on how digital advancements shape crime, crime control, legal frameworks, and societal responses. You will examine legal, societal and ethical issues, study contemporary case examples, and understand how technology impacts crime prevention, investigation, and the administration of justice. The module aims to equip you with the critical insights into the evolving relationship between law, society and technology.
Torts are a central component of civil liability within the English legal system and provide the foundation for more specialist areas of liability, including aspects of media law, sports law and medical law. Through this module you will be introduced to the key concepts which underpin liability in tort and explores the workings of tort alongside the underlying legal, social and economic policies which are relevant to it.
Examine the European Law and evolving landscape of Human Rights protection within both the European Union and the United Kingdom. You will first analyse these protections through the lens of international conventions, followed by an exploration of the status of retained EU law in a post-Brexit context. Finally, the focus shifts to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the domestic application of the Human Rights Act 1998, and the specific fundamental rights guaranteed under the Convention.
