LSBU wins prestigious legal award for Windrush Justice Clinics

London South Bank University (LSBU) with our partners, King's College London and University of Westminster, have won the ‘Best New Pro Bono Activity Award’ at the 2022 LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards. 20 LSBU students and 3 members of staff won the major legal award last night for their work to establish and run Windrush Justice Clinics.

Windrush Justice Clinics assists victims of the Windrush scandal to obtain compensation for the losses and distress they have suffered and provides advice on eligibility for the Windrush Compensation Scheme and assistance gathering evidence in support of an application to the scheme.

The 2022 LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards celebrate the best pro bono (without a charge) activities undertaken by law students and law schools. The winners of the 2022 LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards were announced at a ceremony in the House of Lords on 4 May 2022.

Since the start of 2022, LSBU students and staff have won ten awards at a range of leading and prestigious ceremonies including winning the: Olivier Awards 2022 Best Family Show Award’, RTS London Student Television ‘Camerawork Award’, World Sustainable Energy Days ‘Best Young Energy Efficiency Researcher Award’  and ACR News ‘Environmental Initiative of the Year Award’.

Andy Unger, LSBU Associate Professor, Head of the Law Division,said, “We’re thrilled to win the ‘Best New Pro Bono Activity Award’ for the Windrush Justice Clinics service we run to support Windrush victims attempts to obtain compensation for losses they suffered, with our partners, King's College London & University of Westminster. This prestigious legal award is another example of the positive difference LSBU’s work makes to the lives of Londoners, while we work hard to ensure our students are taught the advanced skills they need to build successful law careers.”

LSBU staff and students have won 13 awards in four months:

  • 4 May 2022: 2022 LawWorks and Attorney General’s Student Pro Bono Awards. 20 LSBU students and 3 members of staff won the ‘Best New Pro Bono Activity Award’ at the legal award for their work to establish and run Windrush Justice Clinics.
  • 28 April 2022: Learning On Screen Awards, ‘Best Student Music Video Award for ‘Say Lilly’ (director Harrison Sherlock, cinematographer Jamie-Oliver Lai, editor Arthur Hill & First Assistant Camera work Ned Graham) and ‘Best Undergraduate Award’ for Niccolò Poiana ‘New Heights’ film.
  • 25 April 2022 - PQ Magazine ‘Editors Special Award’ winner, Usha Mistry, LSBU Accounting & Finance Senior Lecture.
  • 25 April 2022: Royal Television Society London Student Television ‘Craft Award for Camerawork’ winner, LSBU student Alfie Lang.
  • 10 April 2022: Olivier Awards 2022 Best Family Show’ winner, Dr Eugénie Pastor, LSBU Lecturer.
  • 6 April 2022: World Sustainable Energy Days ‘Best Young Energy Efficiency Researcher’ Award winner, Henrique Lagoeiro LSBU student.

  • 17 January 2022: Innovation Practice Design Awards, Bronze & Excellent’ Awards won by two LSBU student (1609 award applications from around the world for 21 awards)
