Meet Hashir - Accounting and Finance student

Your next step – the degree

Our Accounting and Finance program is accredited by Institute of Financial Accountants, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, where you get exemptions from certain ‘must-have’ professional exams down the line, all while learning to guide business decisions across industries, job roles and borders, right in the heart of London - one of the biggest financial capitals in the world.

At LSBU you’ll get to speak the language of business, helping you to understand the recording, reporting and analysing of financial transactions, learning in our Bloomberg Suite with industry-standard software like Xero, Bloomberg, SAGE, FAME, Nvivo and SPSS.

Accounting and Finance is at the heart of every business across the world, so skilled accountants are in high demand across a wide range of sectors. Past students have undertaken work placements and secured graduate roles with the likes of the NHS, the City of London Police, HSBC, MHA, Morgan Stanley, Ardonagh Specialty and Gallagher, or in sectors like insurance and risk management. We’ve even had graduates move into roles with companies such as Natwest and Lloyds, accounting firms such as PWC and E&Y, corporations as well as SMEs and roles such as Finance Analysts, Senior Financial Accountant, and Internal Auditor.

You’ll Learn from expert and experienced professionals-turned academics who will support you at every step. Not only will you get the skills, experience and confidence to set yourself up in a £2.8 trillion industry, but you’ll get a head-start on the further professional qualifications needed to work and practice in specialist areas.

You’ll hit the ground running in First Year with the LSBU Discovery Project, as part of one of your Year 1 modules. Utilising a business project framework you’ll work with fellow students from LSBU Business School to take a project from start to finish, picking up problem-solving skills, idea generation tips and management experience along the way.

Our location gives you access to networking events and guest speakers from around the city and across industries. Alongside industry-experts-turned-LSBU-lecturers, they’ll give you valuable insight and coaching and help you take on a number of Accounting and Finance roles after graduation.

What will I learn?

The Foundation Year

This course will equip you with the introductory and foundational knowledge to confidently progress to degree-level study. On your journey with us, you will study various disciplines in Accounting and Finance, and interact with our strong network of professional bodies, industry specialists and alumni.

The degree

The First Year will consist of four modules, equal parts Accounting and Finance. There are no exams in your first year, so while you’re getting to grips with the likes of Finance and the Economy and Data for Decision Making, we’ll help prepare for the exams down the line in Second Year and beyond.

After your Second Year, you’ll get the opportunity to undertake an optional Work Placement Year as well, applying your skills in a real business environment. We’ll help you make those connections as well, giving you access to inspirational talks with guest speakers, networking events and other extracurriculars that get you shaking hands with the right people.

You can find a detailed look at each of the modules below. Next let's explore how you will learn.

This module will introduce students to software that can be used in the academic and business environment to support their IT confidence, enhance their IT proficiency and work together in online spaces. The students will develop practical skills enabling them to use software to communicate effectively and collect, manipulate and present information. Further, students should develop a confidence with learning and using new software, preparing them for the changing business environment, and the increasing use of virtual spaces and emerging software.

Academic writing is the foundation upon which student success is built. This module will explore the contextual nature of communication, comparing the features of spoken language with the written word. Further, it will explain the key steps that students will need to undertake to complete a persuasive piece of academic writing, providing students with guidance on how to express opinions and form logical academic arguments underpinned by research.

This module supports students in their personal and academic development as they transition into business education, ensuring familiarisation with academic processes and resources, and through the development of sustainable communication and effective coaching skills. Furthermore it facilitates the student’s self-development, through the exploration of their core values and beliefs, enabling them to develop their social and cultural capital through individual and group work, networking, social activity, and exposure to the current business environment and the good coaching practice within organisational culture.

This module introduces students to the basic concepts of business research. Students will apply introductory research skills to a real-world problem in the shape of a local project, which will require students to undertake primary and secondary research into an issue facing a local organisation such as a community service, local charity or small business. The students will select a project as a team and then discuss the research problems with the tutor before starting the project. The students will evaluate outcomes of the research undertaken and provide recommendations for tfhe business. The aim of this module is to expose students to the research process so, in instances where companies pull out, students can complete their research using secondary data and addressing the issues they faced in their methodology section. The students will also conduct a short programme of coaching.

This module teaches the fundamental statistical and mathematical tools that are the principles of decision-making. From a data perspective, the course provides an idea of infrastructures and types of data. It will provide students with the skills to derive insights from a pool of data for decision making. This will create the appropriate ground for modules on BA Business Management and BA Marketing Extended Degrees. For example, one can get the principles to manage financial data, the business model of e-companies and the fundamentals to process secondary data.

In a context of important technological and geopolitical change, this module explores the principles of sound strategy. And it emphasises the role of styles of leadership and forms of governance in achieving strategic direction. An important theme is the place of integrity and responsibility in a challenging and risk-laden business environment. You will be provided with a firm foundation in core theoretical ideas.
