Mechanical Engineering and Design students return inspired from first China–UK Exchange Programme
Students from London South Bank University (LSBU) have described their recent trip to China as “life-changing”, after taking part in the China–UK Youth Student Exchange Programme (YES Programme) for the very first time.
Over 40 LSBU students from across Engineering, Design, and Social Sciences spent two weeks in Nanjing and Hangzhou, immersing themselves in academic workshops, cultural exchanges, and everyday student life in China. For many, it was their first time leaving Europe — and the experience has opened their eyes to new ways of thinking, learning, and connecting.
Breaking down barriers
For Benjamin Nicolas Bishop, a Mechanical Engineering student, the trip was about discovery and challenging perceptions:
The trip really helped break down walls for me, as I’d never been to Asia before and only knew what I’d heard online. Nothing could do it justice. I gained both a deeper respect and adoration for China’s culture and even learned to play mahjong with their teachers and students. I’m eager to go back as soon as I can.
That sense of connection was echoed by Malachi, a Product Design student:
I loved the cultural exchange, not only for the people I met but the knowledge I gained. I enjoyed the free time we spent with Chinese students most of all. Making friends and speaking to young people in China was eye-opening. I believe I left the trip with a new perspective — and the kindness we were shown everywhere we went is something I’ll never forget.
Beyond tourism: learning through immersion
The exchange gave students opportunities that went far beyond what a tourist could experience. Workshops on intelligent manufacturing, 3D printing, digital systems and urban planning sat alongside hands-on cultural activities such as pottery, calligraphy and traditional architecture.
Year 2 Mechanical Engineering student Eva Leonaite explained:
Travelling as a tourist would never have taught me this much about China. Nothing can compare with going to another country with your peers, getting to know each other, and exploring different cultures together. The summer school programme was so well planned and fascinating. I’d do it again and again.
Selma, another participant, reflected on how much she learned through cultural immersion:
It was an incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in Chinese culture. We explored the culturally rich cities of Hangzhou and Nanjing alongside university students who shared their perspectives and experiences. Visiting museums dedicated to history and traditions really enhanced my understanding of the country’s heritage.
Growing confidence and future aspirations
For many students, the exchange was more than a trip — it was a boost to their personal and professional development.
Tasmin, a Mechanical Engineering student, said:
I’m so grateful to be part of this programme. I learned so much about Chinese culture, experienced daily life, and explored impressive university campuses with advanced engineering technology. I would highly recommend taking part in opportunities like this — it builds your confidence and allows you to bond with students from different countries. This trip was such an amazing experience, and I’ll carry it with me forever.
Others left with a new appreciation for China’s balance of innovation and tradition. Muaad, a Mechanical Engineering student, shared:
My visit to China was an eye-opening experience that showed me just how advanced and innovative the country is, while still holding on to its rich and vibrant culture. I was truly impressed by the warm hospitality, which far exceeded my expectations and made me feel incredibly welcomed.
A shared journey
Whether through exploring Hangzhou’s historic temples, taking part in high-tech workshops in Nanjing, or simply bonding with new friends over food, the exchange has left a deep mark on LSBU students.
Shayan summed up the feeling shared by many:
My time in China was truly breathtaking — from its rich culture and stunning landscapes to the warmth of its people. The experiences and memories I gained are ones I’ll cherish forever. It was so much fun that I only wish it could have lasted longer.
Ali, an Advanced Vehicle Engineering student, added:
This trip allowed us to experience amazing sights, incredible technology, and rich history. It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m already looking forward to going back someday to explore even more.
Looking ahead
The YES Programme is just one of the many opportunities LSBU students have to expand their horizons internationally. Following the success of this year’s programme, LSBU plans to continue and grow exchange opportunities, giving more students the chance to learn abroad, experience new cultures, and return with skills, confidence, and memories that last a lifetime.
As Sufian, a Mechanical Engineering student, reflected:
It was one of the best experiences of my life. I saw first-hand how advanced China is and how warm and welcoming its people are. This trip changed how I see the world.
For students thinking about studying at LSBU, the message is clear: university here isn’t just about lectures and exams — it’s about life-changing experiences that connect you to the world.
