Gabriela Conroy-Gibbs, MA Editing and Post Production
Where are you from and which course did you choose to study?
I am from Portsmouth but moved to London in 2017 to attend drama school. I have lived in London ever since.
What was your inspiration or reasons to study this subject?
I had to make a choice between going to drama school or film school. I chose drama school because I knew that I would always wonder ‘what if?’ if I didn’t go... but as I’ve gotten older and acting jobs are far and few between, I wanted to hone in my editing skills and prepare myself for work in the post production industry, because editing has been one of my passions since I studied Film at A level.
Tell me about how the course lecturers have supported you?
All the lecturers have been so knowledgeable, I’ve learned an incredible amount so far and they are very supportive and always ready to help and answer any questions or queries.
What skills have you learned or developed at LSBU?
As drama school was predominantly practical, I haven’t had to read for a subject since A level. I have developed my self-discipline since being at LSBU, by reading across different platforms to acquire new information and inspiration, alongside the practical coursework. I feel grateful to be here and want to make the most of my time here by using the resources available as much as possible.
Where do you see yourself in the future and what are your goals?
If not acting, I see myself working in the post-production industry as an offline editor for longform drama and feature films.
Do you have a work experience placement?
I had the opportunity to have a week placement on work experience as a runner in a post-production house in Soho. This opportunity arose through the university and was an invaluable experience as I had never worked in a post house before.
What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?
As an MA student I have felt positively challenged, and as though I am learning something new about my craft every step of the way. It has been so worth it, and I am so excited to bring the skills I’ve learned into the industry. So if a course seems right for you, do it!
