Mixed Lone Mother Families in Bristol, July 2008 - June 2010
These pilot studies aim to explore the experiences of lone mothers living in Bristol who are bringing up children from mixed racial or ethnic backgroundsIn addition to seeking to understand the experiences of the lone mothers, the Nuffield pilot study also explored the possibility of conducting interviews with children and non-resident fathers.
Working in partnership with a Bristol-based practitioner agency, Single Parent Action Network UK (SPAN), the projects undertook a qualitative case study of lone mother families involving four stages of research activities:
- a literature review on mixed racial and ethnic lone parent families;
- development of interview schedules;
- individual semi-structured interviews with up to 10 lone mothers and, where possible, their children and the non-resident fathers;
- the writing of a short report on findings to be published on SPAN's website.
The project is carried out on behalf of LSBU's Families and Social Capital Research Group.
