We are committed to social justice in education

All our undergraduate and postgraduate courses are embedded in principles of social justice. Ofsted (2014) wrote: "The equality, inclusion and citizenship element is a very strong feature. It prepares trainees exceptionally well for working in an inner-city environment. The quality of this programme is rated very highly by trainees."

Our expertise ensures programmes start with the involvement of our students, who are exposed to experiences which deepen their understanding of education in its widest sense. Students have worked in special schools, hospitals, prisons and overseas in a wide variety of settings. Ofsted (2014) wrote: "The Alternative Education Setting is particularly effective."

Undergraduate programmes

Students have a compulsory placement in an educational setting. This provides opportunities for students to obtain experience and the professional graduate attributes needed to lead to success in the workplace. The programme provides a progression route to Qualified Teacher Status courses or study at Master’s Level.

Students on work-based programmes are already in employment in educational settings. The programmes are designed for them to become more reflective professionals and allows for the development of skills relevant to their work placements. In 2015, 100% of students on the BA Education Studies (work-based) course progressed from Level 4 to Level 5 qualifications.

Initial Teacher Education Programmes (PGCE)

The majority of PGCE trainees experience four different school placements that enable them to become "highly reflective about their own practice...well prepared to teach in culturally and linguistically diverse urban schools" (Ofsted 2014).

The SD programme has been the ultimate experience in developing my confidence, knowledge and ethos as a practitioner. The emotional and practical support provided by LSBU has been vital in succeeding confidently on the course.

Completion and employment rates for our PGCE are both above the sector norms (Ofsted 2014).

Postgraduate and research programmes

The majority of our Master’s and doctoral students work full time in educational settings. Providing opportunities for them to study together in our growing new researcher group which is part of the Education Research Centre provides excellent opportunities for career development and networking.
