LSBU heat pump expert wins prestigious international award

03 June 2026

A London South Bank University (LSBU) expert in heat pump and low‑carbon energy systems has won a prestigious international prize recognising global leadership in sustainable energy research and innovation.

Professor Graeme Maidment, from the LSBU School of Engineering and Design, was named as a recipient of the 2026 Peter Ritter von Rittinger International Heat Pump Award, presented at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Heat Pump Conference.

The award, presented every three years, celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to international collaboration in research, policy, market development and the application of energy-efficient heat pump technologies.

Professor Maidment was recognised for his contributions to technology advancement and administration, alongside his leadership in translating heat pump innovations into real-world urban energy systems. His work has helped bridge the gap between academic research and practical deployment, supporting the transition to low-carbon heating in cities.

In addition to his extensive scientific research, Professor Maidment has played a key role in influencing energy policy and industry practice. A former President of the Institute of Refrigeration, he has worked across academia, government and industry to accelerate the adoption of sustainable heating and cooling solutions.

The Peter Ritter von Rittinger Award is named after the Austrian engineer who installed the world’s first known heat pump in 1855. Today, it recognises those continuing that legacy through innovation and international impact.

“What a fantastic surprise and deep honour to be recognised at the IEA Heat Pump Conference for the Peter Ritter von Rittinger International award,” said Professor Maidment.

“Although I was presented the award, it recognises the work of an amazing group working in heating and cooling over many years - a massive team effort from many. I was humbled to be recognised by this and to be awarded alongside industry leaders.”

Professor Maidment was honoured alongside leading experts from across the globe, including Björn Palm (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden), Thomas Nowak (Qvantum International), Choyu Watanabe (Zeneral Heatpump Industry/Nagoya University), and Renato Lazzarin (University of Padua).

His recognition highlights LSBU’s strength in applied research and its commitment to developing practical solutions to global energy challenges.
