01 September 2016

London South Bank University (LSBU) has been shortlisted in the Entrepreneurial University of the Year category of the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2016. The award recognises the work of universities in creating and developing environments and cultures that foster enterprising attitudes, and deliver significant entrepreneurial impact at regional, national and international levels.

The Entrepreneurial University of the Year award reviews how LSBU:

  • Places enterprise, entrepreneurship and innovation at the heart of strategic development
  • Supports entrepreneurial skills and ideas in both staff and students
  • Creates entrepreneurial impact through entrepreneurial activity at local, national and international levels
  • Uses entrepreneurial experience and activities to influence policy at all levels

The Times Higher Education Awards are widely recognised as the Oscars of the higher education sector.

Professor David Phoenix, LSBU’s Vice-Chancellor, said:

“Being shortlisted for this award is a significant achievement for LSBU, particularly for the Research, Enterprise and Innovation team.

“Such recognition helps us to celebrate the entrepreneurial drive of our students and graduates.

“We work with over 600 local SMEs and we have boosted growth, created jobs, contributed to the economy and created real-world opportunities and seen rapid growth in student enterprise. These relationships are key to facilitating the education and growth of our students and staff.

“But enterprise is not just about business and spin outs. It's about creating an environment where staff and students are able to create new ideas and ensuring they have the confidence and support to try out those ideas. This provides new opportunities for students but the skills they develop are also key to driving our graduate employment which has shown some of the fastest growth in the UK for two years running.

“It’s this environment and extracurricular support that helps our students become what they want to be.”

Gurpreet Jagpal, LSBU’s Director of Research, Enterprise and Innovation, said:

“It’s great that LSBU is one of the Times Higher Education Awards finalists. This has been a very busy and exciting year for our team as we worked with an increasing number of local businesses, and supported more students to reach their entrepreneurial potential.

“Our shortlisting recognises the range of innovative projects and programmes we deliver through collaboration with academics, enterprise societies and SMEs.”

The awards ceremony will take place on 24 November at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane. Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend, including senior sector figures, and academic and professional university staff from across the UK.
