The rewarding side of Architecture, by Todd Fletcher, Architecture student and apprentice

Architecture is more than just designing buildings—it’s about shaping experiences, solving problems, and bringing creative visions to life. LSBU student and apprentice Todd Fletcher shares what drew him to the field, his experiences balancing work and study, and his advice for aspiring architects.

What inspired you to study Architecture?

I’ve always been fascinated by the way buildings shape our experiences and influence the way we interact with spaces. Growing up, I was drawn to both the creative and technical aspects of design, and architecture felt like the perfect blend of art and problem-solving. The ability to create spaces that enhance lives, whether through sustainability, aesthetics, or functionality. Seeing something built and used from what you’ve designed has always been the driver that fuels my ambition.

It's so easy to get bogged down with work and deadlines at my 9-5, but being able to release and test new ideas at university is a breath of fresh air.

What has been your most rewarding experience studying or working in architecture?

One of the most rewarding experiences has been working on real-world projects as an apprentice, particularly when I see my designs evolve from concept to construction. It’s fulfilling to navigate the challenges of design, client needs, and technical constraints while learning from experienced professionals. Additionally, being able to step away from the practical and business side of architecture, and explore the academic side is what is needed to reignite my passion for architecture. It’s so easy to get bogged down with work and deadlines at my 9-5, but being able to release and test new ideas at university is a breath of fresh air.

Studying at LSBU for all these years has encouraged the value of perseverance, whereby completing module after module, year after year, meant that an element of grit had to be applied to get through both the degree and masters. This has taught me to see through any task at hand to its fullest extent.

Completing the apprenticeship at LSBU has meant a lot managing, be it time, work load, and filling out apprenticeship documents such as KSB trackers and so on - all contributing to the work ethic required of an architect.

Being close to key landmarks and construction projects provides constant inspiration.

Why is LSBU’s location beneficial for Architecture studies?

LSBU is in the heart of South London; I’ve been studying here since I was 19 years old, back in 2018. LSBU provide students with access to a diverse range of architectural courses, world-class practices, and industry events. Being the first to run the apprenticeship, they are well experienced in running the courses efficiently. Being close to key cultural and historical landmarks, as well as major construction projects, provides constant inspiration.

What advice do you have for students considering studying Architecture at LSBU?

Make the most of the opportunities available—engage with tutors, attend guest lectures, and take advantage of the university’s connections to the industry. Architecture is demanding, so time management is crucial. Also, embrace the practical aspects of design; working on live projects and experimenting with materials will deepen your understanding. I would explore their courses whether full or part-time, apprenticeship, or architectural technology. I would understand what best suits my lifestyle and goals and go for it!
