What could your Computer Science degree lead to next?
For Son and Ashleigh, continuing their studies at postgraduate level was a way to build on what they had already learned at LSBU, develop more specialised skills and prepare for the careers they want to pursue.
Both studied undergraduate degrees at LSBU before progressing to postgraduate study – Son will be studying MSc Applied Artificial Intelligence, while Ashleigh will study MSc Data Science.
From discovering an interest to developing expertise
For Son, his undergraduate studies helped him discover a particular interest in artificial intelligence and data.
“During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to explore machine learning through modules such as AI, Data Mining and Big Data Analytics. These experiences, combined with strong academic performance, sparked my passion for the field.”
Postgraduate study is now giving him the opportunity to take that interest further, developing more advanced knowledge in areas including deep learning, natural language processing and working with real-world datasets.
“I want to build upon the foundational knowledge I've acquired and develop more sophisticated skills in model development, optimisation, and deployment.”
For Ashleigh, her undergraduate degree similarly helped her discover where she wanted to take her career.
“My undergraduate degree gave me a broad overview of IT and helped me discover my interest in Data Science. I realised there was so much more I wanted to explore.”
Her MSc is allowing her to develop that interest further, with a focus on data analysis, machine learning, statistical modelling and practical problem-solving.
Develop skills you can take into your career
Postgraduate study isn't just about gaining more knowledge. It can also help you develop the technical, analytical and professional skills needed to apply that knowledge in the workplace.
Ashleigh is looking forward to building her confidence in working with larger and more complex datasets, while developing her critical thinking, research, problem-solving and communication skills.
“Working in technology isn't only about knowing how to use a tool – it’s about understanding a problem, asking the right questions and being able to explain your solution.”
For Son, developing advanced technical skills is closely connected to his career ambitions. He wants to build expertise in machine learning frameworks, statistical analysis, data engineering, deep learning, neural networks and natural language processing.
“My goal is to develop advanced technical skills and expertise that will prepare me for a career in AI and data science.”
He is particularly interested in careers such as machine learning engineering, data science and research, where he can use these skills to work on complex problems and contribute to new developments in the field.
Build on what you already know
For both students, their postgraduate studies are a continuation of the knowledge and skills they developed during their undergraduate degrees.
Son says his undergraduate degree gave him a strong foundation across core areas of Computer Science, while also helping him develop the habits needed for further study.
“The supportive academic environment helped me develop effective study habits, time management, collaboration, and the confidence to seek guidance and critical feedback.”
Ashleigh also credits her undergraduate experience with preparing her for the challenges of postgraduate study.
“My final-year dissertation helped me develop my ability to work independently and manage a project from start to finish.”
These experiences have given both students a foundation to build on as they work towards their future careers.
