Mathursika Kannathasan BSc Adult Nursing, LSBU Croydon

Where are you from, and which course did you choose to study?

I am from Sri Lanka and moved to London when I was 10 years old. I am currently studying Adult Nursing at London South Bank University.

Please tell us about your Student of the Year award.

I was honoured to receive student nurse of the year from Chief Nurse Avey Bhata at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The award recognised my dedication, compassion, and commitment to delivering safe, high-quality patient care. It was an unforgettable experience, also in the audience were Chief Nursing Officer for England, Duncan Burton, and Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, who both delivered inspiring and motivational speeches to everyone present. Being recognised in front of such respected nursing leaders reminded me how meaningful this profession is and motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my career.

Why did you choose LSBU?

I chose LSBU because several people close to me such as my cousin, uncle, and a friend studied there and spoke so highly about their experiences. They shared how supportive and approachable the staff were, and how LSBU truly cares about each student’s success. Their recommendations made me confident that LSBU would be the perfect place for me to begin my nursing journey.

What was your inspiration or reason to study this subject?

Since I was young, I’ve always wanted a career that allowed me to help others. I once dreamed of becoming a doctor and later considered social work, but through studying Health and Social Care, I discovered my passion for nursing. I realised it combined everything I love caring for others, making meaningful connections, and supporting people through difficult times. I’ve always been a kind and empathetic person, and nursing allows me to use those qualities every day.

Tell me about how the course lecturers have supported you.

The lecturers at LSBU have been incredibly supportive throughout my studies. They are always willing to offer extra guidance, signpost useful resources, and check in on students’ wellbeing. Their encouragement and understanding made a huge difference to my confidence and helped me balance my academic work with placement responsibilities.

What kind of new technologies and equipment have you learned about in your course?

During my course, I have learned to use various clinical tools and equipment that are vital for safe and effective patient care. This includes monitoring vital signs, using oxygen delivery devices, and assisting with procedures such as venepuncture and ECGs. I’ve also developed practical skills through simulation training at LSBU, which prepared me well for real-life clinical practice.

What skills have you learned or developed at LSBU?

Studying at LSBU has helped me grow both personally and professionally. I have developed strong communication, leadership, and teamwork skills. I’ve also learned how to stay calm and focused under pressure, show empathy, and advocate for patients. These experiences have shaped me into a confident and compassionate future nurse.

Where do you see yourself in the future, and what are your goals?

I see myself becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist in future. This role focuses on a specific area of nursing and allows you to provide expert care, guide other nurses, and help improve patient experiences. I’m drawn to this path because it combines hands-on care with leadership and education, giving me the chance to share my knowledge and support others. My goal is to keep learning, developing my skills, and becoming a nurse who makes a lasting difference to both patients and the nursing profession.

Do you have a work experience placement, and where are you working?

My most recent placement was at Guy’s Hospital, where I completed my Theatre, Anaesthetics and Pre-operative placement. This experience gave me valuable insight into the surgical journey of patients from preparation before surgery, to anaesthetic care, and support in theatre. It was a unique opportunity to work alongside a multidisciplinary team, develop technical skills, and understand the importance of teamwork and communication in delivering safe surgical care.

What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?

If you’re thinking about studying at LSBU, I would highly recommend it! The staff are incredibly kind and supportive, the facilities are excellent, and the learning environment is inclusive and welcoming. LSBU truly gives you the foundation you need to succeed as a nurse and make a positive difference in people’s lives.
