From Student to Future Entrepreneur: How Studying Business Management at LSBU Sparked a Career Journey

Flexibility, opportunity and growth. These are the pillars that shaped Margarida's graduate journey through LSBU’s Business Management programme. Drawn to the dynamic nature of business and the potential for long-term entrepreneurial success, she found not only the knowledge was needed, but a vibrant community and hands-on career support that made her university years unforgettable. From lectures to LinkedIn optimisation, and friendships built in McLaren House, LSBU offered far more than a degree—it offered direction.

Why did you choose to study Business Management?

I chose to study Business Management because I wanted a degree that would offer flexibility and open up a wide range of career opportunities. Business is a broad field, and I knew that studying it would provide me with transferable skills that are valuable in almost any industry. I’ve always been interested in leadership and how organisations are run, and I felt this course would allow me to build on those interests in a practical and meaningful way. One of my long-term goals is to start my own business, so I wanted a degree that would not only help me get a job straight after university but also equip me with the knowledge and confidence to become an entrepreneur in the future.

How do you think LSBU has prepared you for your career?

LSBU has offered so much more than just academic knowledge; it really supported my personal and professional development. One of the most helpful services was the Careers Hub, which helped me improve my CV, set up and optimise my LinkedIn profile, and guided me through the process of applying for graduate roles. Their advice helped me feel much more confident as I started planning for life after university.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying Business Management?

Go for it, you honestly will not regret it. Business Management is such a versatile course that can take you in so many directions, whether you want to work in finance, marketing, HR, or even start your own business, the skills you gain will be relevant and useful. It is also a great course for building soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, all of which are essential in the working world. If you are unsure what path to take, Business Management is a great foundation to explore your interests and keep your options open.

What are your plans now that you have graduated?

I officially graduated in May, and I have just applied for a graduate role at the LSBU Students’ Union. I am excited about the opportunity to stay connected with the university and give back to the student community in a professional capacity. I am also continuing to explore roles that align with my long-term goals, especially positions that will allow me to build leadership experience and understand how organisations operate from the inside.

Did you live in halls, and how did you find the experience?

Yes, I lived in McLaren House, and it honestly made such a positive difference to my university experience. The location could not have been better, just a three-minute walk from the Business School and right in the heart of London. Being so close to campus meant I could easily attend lectures and events without worrying about commuting. What I loved most about living in halls was the sense of community; everyone was really friendly, and it felt comforting to live with people who were going through the same difficulties of university life. We supported each other, made lasting friendships, and shared memories I will never forget.
