Nathan Fung, MSc Chiropractic

Where are you from, and which course did you choose to study?

I am from Hong Kong. I moved to the UK around three years ago, and I chose to study Chiropractic at LSBU. I studied my A levels in the UK before my Master of Chiropractic.

Why did you choose to study this subject area?

By studying chiropractic, I am inspired by a chiropractor I met because of my health issues. I have costochondritis, and they used manual therapy and physical therapy to heal and improve my condition. This gives me insight into the different diagnosis methodologies using knowledge of human anatomy, pathology, and physiology. Because of my interest, she introduced me to a large range of medical radiology techniques from the perspective of a chiropractor. I was interested in the different kinds of MRI, X-ray, and CT.

Why did you decide on LSBU?

LSBU is a university located in the heart of central London, allowing me to explore the city, meet new people, and find new opportunities alongside my studies. Whilst expanding my knowledge in chiropractic care, I am supported by university resources on campus, like Croydon Chiropractic Clinic. These combine classroom and practical learning using a range of pathology cases we might face in the future, and introduce us to clinical practice.

Putting my experience to good use.

What I like most about my course is how the study environment is attentive and focused. The professors explain new concepts well and help with any struggles. The facilities are advanced and support the high-level classroom content delivery. Tutors offer different kinds of support where needed, and are always friendly and approachable. We also get to do some cool things like cadaver’s dissection.

Can you tell us about your lecturers and teaching experience?

The lecturers are supportive and get to know each student at an individual level. On harder topics and ideas, we receive further support in a smaller classroom. This makes it easy to ask questions and explain tricky concepts.

Have you done a work placement or any work experience?

Yes, there are university clinics where we get some practical work placement. This helps us understand the graduate role more while learning on the job. We can learn specific classroom-taught concepts from outside the classroom and understand our studies better. Another placement I have done is a radiology lab. We get the chance to learn machine operations, while studying the best imaging modality to diagnose a patient.

What kind of career would you like to move into?

Following my degree, I would like to become a Doctor of Chiropractic (MChiro) and a  Doctor of Anatomy (PHD). This is from my own interests in anatomy, musculoskeletal systems, and diagnosis. Diagnosis specifically is important in helping the health of the general public. This degree has helped me understand the UK healthcare system and my potential career opportunities.

Have you taken part in any extracurricular activities such as societies, sports or and social clubs while being a student at LSBU?

I am a regular participant in the badminton club. There are weekly training sessions hosted where I am a regular member. This is my new interest, and I am grateful for this present opportunity as I have met many new friends, as well as improved practical sports skills and interpersonal skills.

What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?

Keep new opportunities open and manage time well for your studies. The University has many different opportunities that you can utilise. It's a university where you can get along with many different students and staff. Everyone is approachable, and you can be confident in making use of this. There are good study spots in the campus libraries and on-hand support for different help services from the beginning to the end of your degree.
