Lara Mohamed, BSc Information Technology

Can you describe your current job and daily responsibilities?

As the Customer Services Enquiry Manager at LSBU, I’m responsible for leading and enhancing the delivery of enquiry services across the university. A typical day involves monitoring the quality of enquiries across platforms like live chat, phone, face-to-face, and email, and making sure students get clear, accurate, and timely support. I support the team’s development through training and feedback, and use data to identify patterns, gaps, or service improvements.

A key part of my role is building strong partnerships across the university. I work closely with different departments—like Student Life, Registry, and IT—to make sure that even if enquiries fall outside my team’s direct remit, they’re still resolved quickly and consistently for the student. That cross-team collaboration is essential for maintaining high-quality service.

How did studying at LSBU help you achieve your career goals?

Studying at LSBU gave me both the technical knowledge and real-world experience I needed to build my career. I graduated with a degree in Information Technology, which laid the foundation for my understanding of systems, databases, and service tools that I use every day. But more than that, LSBU helped me grow professionally—I received support from lecturers not just academically, but personally too. I also got amazing guidance from the Careers Hub with CV writing, job applications, and mock interviews. All of that made a big difference when I started applying for roles.

What are the key benefits of studying this program at LSBU?

One of the biggest benefits is how practical and applied the program is. You don’t just study theory—you learn how to use real tools, work on live projects, and develop the kind of skills that employers are genuinely looking for. The teaching is really supportive, and the focus on employability is strong, whether that’s through placements, workshops, or access to services like the Careers Hub. Plus, the connections you make here, with both staff and students, can genuinely shape your journey.

What were some of the highlights of your course?

A few things stand out: First, the practical modules—especially those around databases, coding, and system design—really pushed me to problem-solve and think critically. I also had the opportunity to lead coding sessions for other students and had the opportunity to lead a project called Old Alone UK, where we taught old Spanish people the fundamentals of Cyber Security, which boosted my confidence and leadership skills. And honestly, the extracurricular activities I got involved with outside the classroom helped shape who I am. They gave me experience in communication, teamwork, and even public speaking, which I now use daily.

What kind of support was available to you as a student?

The support at LSBU was a big part of why I was able to succeed. Academically, my lecturers were always approachable—they genuinely cared and gave me tailored advice when I was stuck. Outside of class, the Careers Hub played a key role. They helped me refine my CV, practice interviews, and even explore job opportunities I hadn’t considered. There was also mental health and wellbeing support available, which I found really reassuring when things got stressful. It felt like there was always someone I could go to.

Do you have any advice for prospective students considering this program at LSBU?

Say yes to opportunities. Whether it's a project, a student rep role, or volunteering to lead a session, those experiences will shape you in ways a classroom can't. Use the support available—go to the Careers Hub early, speak to your lecturers, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Also, try to gain experience alongside your studies. That’s what gave me an edge—combining technical knowledge with real-world skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership. If you’re proactive, this course can open a lot of doors for you.
