Ida Lyckemy: LLB Law Alumni
When Ida Lyckemy first discovered law through optional modules at college in Sweden, she had no idea it would lead her to London South Bank University. Her passion for understanding how the legal system shapes everyday life drove her to move to London and pursue an LLB Law degree BSc. Through hands-on experience at the Legal Advice Clinic and leadership as Vice-President of the Law Society, Ida transformed into a confident legal professional, now completing her master's at Queen Mary University with SQE preparation.
Why did you choose to study Law?
There are many reasons why I decided to study law. I would say that my interest in law began in college in Sweden when I chose some law modules as a part of my curriculum. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the legal system and its impact on our everyday lives. That interest motivated me to take additional short courses back home. When I later moved to London, and it came to apply for university, studying law felt like the obvious next step for me.
Why did you choose London South Bank University?
A close friend of mine from another course recommended LSBU to me. The more I learned about the university, the more confident I became in my choice. I submitted a late application to the university, and the admissions team were really helpful and supportive.
Can you tell us more about the Legal Advice Clinic experience?
I had a fantastic time at the Legal Advice Clinic. We were teamed up with other law students and supervised by a solicitor, and we got to meet clients with real cases and questions. I was very nervous the first time I led a client meeting, but I grew in confidence over time. It was extremely rewarding to help the clients the best we could and apply the knowledge we had been taught in our modules to real-life scenarios. Our supervisors were very helpful in guiding us on how to think and help the client.
What work did you do with the Law Society, and how did this support other students?
In my third year of university, I served as Vice-President of the Law Society. I was very close friends with the entire committee, and we organised several events throughout the year. Some of our main activities included the Law Society Career Fair, which brought several law firms to the university, the End of Year Law Ball and bar meet-ups. These events helped connect students across all year groups and courses, creating a sense of community. They also provided valuable networking opportunities with people outside of the university, which I thought was beneficial for everyone.
How do you think LSBU prepared you for your career?
LSBU prepared me well for my career, especially as I was able to choose modules that aligned with materials I would see in the SQE exam. Since I planned to take the SQE soon after graduating, it was helpful to select modules that introduced some of the topics I will now be revising in more depth. Having a wide range of modules to choose from allowed me to explore areas I found interesting. and also gave me a strong foundation for the SQE. Additionally, opportunities like the Legal Advice Clinic helped me build confidence and gave me valuable insight into how to apply what I learned to real-life situations.
Can you tell us about the academic support?
I was really happy with the academic support at LSBU. Whenever we raised a concern or had questions about the course, it was taken seriously and handled appropriately. If there was any area of a module we struggled with, all lecturers were approachable and willing to help.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying Law at LSBU?
Take advantage of all the opportunities available to you and say yes to experiences that might be outside of your comfort zone, as they will help you grow and make the most of your degree. At the same time, be mindful of balancing extracurricular activities alongside your studies so you do not take on too much. Getting involved at LSBU helped me build confidence and made my overall university experience very rewarding.
What are your plans now you have graduated?
After graduation, I decided to begin my master’s straight away. I am currently studying International Business Law (with SQE Preparation), and I will sit the SQE exam in January. Once that is completed, I hope to take some time to travel before looking for any permanent work opportunities.
