Getting industry-ready: Kieran’s Acting for Stage & Screen journey
Passionate about acting, theatre and the wider world of arts and media, Kieran chose LSBU to pursue his ambition of working in the industry. From motion capture and professional voice work to working with Frantic Assembly and industry guest tutors, his course has given him practical experience and a deeper understanding of what it takes to build a career in performance. Ranked 9th in the UK for Drama and Dance in the Guardian University Guide 2027, LSBU is a place where Kieran can turn his passion for performance into industry-ready experience.
Could you tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to choose Acting & Performance at LSBU?
I'm optimistic, caring and very passionate about arts and media (video games, music, theatre, movies, the lot) and what it can mean to both the creator and the viewer, and so I decided to come to LSBU and its acting course. I really wanted to study the arts in London, and I felt this university was in a great location with lots of opportunities to see creativity.
What have you had the opportunity to work on or get involved with as part of your course that has given you experience of working in the industry?
In this course I have had the opportunity to do voice work with a professional, motion capture with industry-standard technology and be taught by guest tutors who have worked in the profession.
Can you tell us about a project, production or practical experience at LSBU that you particularly enjoyed or learned a lot from? What did you do?
One project/module I really enjoyed was The Actor and The Audience. The module really opened my perspective on how audiences can interact and react to performances, and I found myself really enjoying and challenging myself when making a piece that would give the audience something to really think about or feel deeply.
How has the practical, hands-on nature of your course helped you develop the skills you’ll need to work in the industry?
The practical aspect of the course has really helped me develop more leadership and group skills while also amplifying my creative process and mindset by working with so many creatively different individuals.
Have you had any opportunities to work with industry professionals, external organisations or on real-world projects? If so, what was that experience like?
Yes, I have had opportunities to work with industry professionals such as Frantic Assembly and the previously mentioned guest tutors and motion capture experience. Working with professionals can be intense and challenging but it’s really worthwhile with the experience you gain and what it teaches you.
Has your time at LSBU helped you understand what it’s really like to work in the industry, including the expectations and challenges you might face in a job?
My time at LSBU has helped me further understand the industry along with its challenges and professional expectations. Also, I've learnt a lot about some parts of the profession that go unnoticed or unconsidered.
What are your plans for after you graduate, and how do you feel your time at LSBU has prepared you for that next step?
After I graduate, I really want to spend my time traveling and auditioning like there's no tomorrow! I really want to get my foot in the door, so I can eventually enter the industry.
