Georgina Clarke, LLB (Hons) Law: "LSBU has a fantastic support system"

Georgina Clarke had spent many years working in the entertainment industry, but she had one underlying ambition that never left her – to study law. "It was something that was always eating away at me," she explains. "Eventually, it became a burning ambition, and through my work it seemed only natural that I should want to work in entertainment law."

Fantastic support system

Having spent some time away from education, Georgina was understandably apprehensive about returning to study, but she found that the support at LSBU enabled her to make the transition without ever feeling alone or out of her depth.

It was tough returning to study, but I have been very lucky because LSBU has a fantastic support system. The Centre for Learning & Development and the understanding approach of my lecturers have helped me to overcome many of the issues I have faced as a mature student. My LSBU experience has been very positive from day one.

Mentoring scheme

Like many of our students, Georgina has found our alumni mentoring scheme extremely beneficial. The aim is to improve students' employability by enabling them to tap into the extensive experience of our graduates. Current students are matched with graduates who are already striking out in their chosen profession, allowing them to tap into their mentor's experience and knowledge.

Convenient

Having signed up for the scheme, Georgina was delighted to be paired with a lawyer working at Shell International. "It's been such a bonus having a mentor," she says. "It's all part of what is a fantastic support system and it is really convenient too, because the Shell office is only ten minutes away from LSBU. It makes meeting up really easy."

Exceptional opportunity

The ease with which Georgina can meet her mentor provides an insight into another of LSBU's major selling points for Law students. "Having a university in the middle of London is a real advantage," she says. "You are right on the doorstep of the legal and political worlds. There are just so many advantages available to you when you are studying in such an amazing location. LSBU Law students are the only students invited to attend the Professional Forum for Lawyers, held in the Keyworth Building on the LSBU campus, for example. It's an exceptional opportunity to meet and listen to some of the country's most esteemed lawyers and QCs discussing ground-breaking topics and new legal precedents."

Volunteering opportunities

Other opportunities that LSBU Law students can make the most of include volunteering in the LSBU Legal Advice Clinic, providing face-to-face legal advice to the public under the supervision of qualified practicing solicitors. A Qualifying Law Degree, it is also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, and Georgina is in no doubt that she will receive all the help and support she needs when it comes to getting her legal career off the ground.  "I know that my degree at LSBU will give me the right foundation to make my career ambitions achievable", she smiles. "The rest will be up to me."
