From Sylhet to LSBU: Building a Future in Computer Science and Data Science

Saiful reflects on his journey from Bangladesh to London South Bank University, sharing how LSBU’s practical teaching, supportive community, and hands-on opportunities have helped him develop technical skills, gain confidence, and progress towards a future in Data Science.

Why LSBU and Computer Science and Informatics

From the beginning, LSBU stood out to me for its strong focus on real-world, practical learning rather than purely theoretical study. In Computer Science, being able to apply knowledge is essential, and the course offered exactly that balance.

As an international student from Sylhet, Bangladesh, I was also looking for a university that felt inclusive and supportive. LSBU gave me that reassurance—it felt like a place where I could adapt to a new culture, build confidence, and grow both personally and professionally.

I also wanted a course that would strengthen my technical foundation while giving me opportunities to apply learning in real contexts. The Computer Science and Informatics programme delivered this, and looking back, it was absolutely the right decision.

“I chose LSBU not only for its practical approach to learning, but for the sense of support and belonging it offers to students from around the world.”

Moving to London and settling into university life

Moving from Bangladesh to London was a major life transition. Coming from a village background, I had to adapt not only to a new education system, but also to a completely different culture and pace of life.

During my school years at Border Guard Public School and College, I achieved a GPA-5 (A*), which required consistency and discipline. Travelling daily from my village to the city helped me build resilience early on, which prepared me for studying abroad.

When I was researching universities, I found LSBU through students with similar backgrounds who were doing well, which gave me confidence that I could succeed here too. Receiving the £3,000 international scholarship also made studying in London possible for me.

Over time, I’ve grown more independent and confident. LSBU has provided a supportive and inclusive environment that has made settling into London a very positive experience.

“Coming from a small village to studying in London has been a journey of growth, and LSBU has played a key role in helping me turn my ambitions into reality.”

3. Support, teaching and awards at LSBU

One of the most valuable aspects of my experience at LSBU has been the support from lecturers. They take time to understand my strengths and guide me on the best path forward, which has helped shape both my academic and career direction.

They are also very approachable and responsive—whether by email or MS Teams, I’ve always felt supported, even outside normal hours. That level of commitment has made a real difference to my confidence and progress.

During my time here, I was honoured to receive the Student Professionalism Award, which recognised my consistency, teamwork, and responsibility. I also completed the Google Developers Group “Build with AI” workshop, which gave me hands-on experience with emerging technologies.

“The support I’ve received at LSBU goes beyond academics—it has given me guidance, confidence, and the motivation to keep pushing forward.”

Extracurricular activities and student experience

My extracurricular involvement has been a key part of my development at LSBU. As a Student Ambassador and CSI Ambassador, I’ve engaged with a wide range of students and represented the university in different settings, which has helped me build confidence and communication skills.

I’ve also taken part in activities such as Lego robotics sessions and “escape code” games, helping make computing more engaging and accessible for younger learners.

One of the most rewarding experiences has been supporting first-year Computer Science students through MS Teams, helping them with programming, networking, web development, and AI fundamentals. It has strengthened my own understanding while allowing me to give back to others.

“Through these experiences, I’ve been able to turn my knowledge into impact by helping others learn, grow, and feel more confident in their journey.”

Future plans: progressing into Data Science

My interest in Data Science developed through my degree, particularly through data-focused modules, workshops, and exposure to AI. I’m excited by the potential of data to solve real-world problems and support better decision-making across industries.

My undergraduate degree at LSBU has given me a strong foundation in programming, problem-solving, and analytical thinking, with a strong emphasis on practical application through projects and coursework.

This is why I chose to continue at LSBU for my postgraduate study. The supportive environment and practical teaching approach gave me the confidence to build on what I’ve already learned and specialise further.

“Choosing to continue at LSBU was not just a decision based on familiarity, but on trust in the environment that has already helped me grow and succeed.”
