Human Science Senior Lecturer Claire Atkinson
How did you get into your field? What made you want to pursue it as a career?
I've always been fascinated by infectious diseases and how laboratory science can help diagnose and manage them. I also enjoy solving puzzles, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to diagnostic virology. Identifying the cause of an infection often involves piecing together clinical clues, laboratory results, and scientific knowledge to find the answer, much like solving a complex puzzle. I spent over 20 years working in the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist specialising in Medical Microbiology and Virology before moving into higher education, where I can share that passion and real-world experience with the next generation of scientists.
How do you help students succeed during their time at LSBU and prepare for their future careers?
Having worked in the NHS and in academic research, I understand what employers are looking for in graduates entering the profession. I help students develop not only strong scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills, but also the professional behaviours, communication skills and problem-solving abilities needed in the workplace. Through research-led teaching, hands-on learning, and career guidance, I prepare students to progress into healthcare, industry, or research roles confidently.
What opportunities can students get while studying your subject at LSBU?
Students have access to a wide range of opportunities that help prepare them for their future careers. Through initiatives such as Meet the Professionals events, students can network with Biomedical Scientists and other healthcare professionals, gaining valuable insight into different career pathways. Our IBMS Club helps students prepare for IBMS placements and professional practice, giving them a real advantage when applying for placements and graduate roles. We also invite guest lecturers from across the Biomedical Science profession, allowing students to learn directly from experts working in clinical, research and industry settings. In addition, I actively involve students in my research projects, providing opportunities to gain hands-on laboratory experience, develop research skills and in some cases, become co-authors on scientific publications. These experiences help students build their CVs and stand out in a competitive job market.
What kinds of careers or opportunities could students move into after studying your subject?
Biomedical science graduates can pursue careers in NHS and private diagnostic laboratories, biomedical and healthcare industries, research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and further study. The analytical and practical skills they gain also open doors to a wide range of STEM careers.
What would you say to someone thinking about studying your subject at LSBU?
If you're curious about science and want to make a difference to people's lives, biomedical science is a fantastic choice. At LSBU, you'll gain practical experience, learn from staff with real-world expertise and develop the skills needed for a rewarding and varied career.
Has there been a moment in your career where you saw your work make a real difference?
There have been several moments throughout my career where I have seen the impact of my work. I contributed to research that helped support the inclusion of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) in NICE guidance for expectant mothers. I have been involved in developing diagnostic tests for viral infections that have improved patient care. Working on outbreaks such as Ebola, COVID-19, and influenza, I saw firsthand how laboratory science plays a critical role in public health decision-making. Professionally, becoming Chief Examiner for Virology at the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) has given me the opportunity to influence standards within the profession. However, one of the most rewarding aspects of my career is seeing students grow in confidence, develop their skills and go on to successful careers in healthcare and science. Knowing that my teaching has helped them achieve their goals is incredibly fulfilling.
