Esme McCarthy - LLB (Hons) Law (Business Law Pathway) Alumni

Esme McCarthy chose Law at London South Bank University to build a meaningful legal career. Attracted by LSBU’s focus on employability and practical learning, she gained experience through the Legal Advice Clinic, internships, and mini-pupillages—preparing her for postgraduate study at Cambridge and a future in commercial law.

Why did you choose to join LSBU and not another university?

I chose to join LSBU because of its strong reputation for graduate employability, which was an important factor in ensuring that I would be well-prepared for my future career. The LLB programme stood out to me as both academically rigorous and practically focused, offering a balance of theoretical knowledge and real-world application. I was particularly interested in working in the Legal Advice Clinic as this provides an invaluable opportunity to develop professional skills while studying. Together, the career-focused approach, prime London location, and practical learning opportunities made LSBU stand out as the perfect place to pursue my studies.

Can you tell us more about any placement or internship opportunities you had while studying?

During my second year, the ‘Working in the Law’ module provided structured support in securing an internship with a barrister, offering valuable insight into the legal profession. This was a particularly significant achievement for me as a first-generation aspiring lawyer with no prior professional connections. This internship and my placement in the Legal Advice Clinic strengthened my CV and practical legal skills. As a result, I was able to secure several mini pupillages at leading commercial chancery sets, as well as a vacation scheme, all of which have been instrumental in shaping my career ambitions.

Can you tell us about the experience in the Legal Advice Clinic and what you gained from this?

My placement in the Legal Advice Clinic provided an excellent opportunity to engage directly with clients by conducting interviews, undertaking legal research, and delivering tailored, face-to-face legal advice over 12 weeks. This experience significantly enhanced my client care skills and deepened my understanding of the practicalities of access to justice and the civil litigation process. Working on real cases not only refined my legal knowledge but also strengthened my ability to communicate complex information clearly and empathetically to clients facing difficult circumstances.

How did LSBU prepare you for your career?

LSBU has played a pivotal role in preparing me for my legal career by combining academic rigour with extensive practical opportunities. Specialised modules in Commercial Law, Corporate Law, and Business and Human Rights refined my expertise in my areas of interest, while the university’s strong career-focused approach ensured I developed the skills, experience, and confidence to succeed. This combination of focused study and practical preparation has equipped me to progress confidently.

What was the support like at LSBU?

The support at LSBU was exceptional, both academically and in terms of career development. Academically, lecturers were approachable, knowledgeable, and committed to helping students succeed, providing clear guidance and constructive feedback that strengthened my understanding and performance. The careers support was equally valuable, offering tailored advice, skills workshops, and networking opportunities that helped me build a strong professional profile. This combination of academic guidance and career-focused support ensured I was well-prepared for the next stage of my studies and future career.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying Law?

Studying Law is both challenging and rewarding, so approach it with commitment, curiosity, and an open mind. Make the most of every opportunity to apply your learning in practice—whether through clinics, internships, or networking—as these experiences are just as important as classroom study. Above all, be proactive in seeking support and building connections; the relationships and skills you develop along the way will be invaluable for your future career.

What did you go on to do after you graduated, and what were your future plans?

After graduating from LSBU, I completed an LLM at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Commercial Law. The strong academic foundations and skills I developed at LSBU were instrumental in enabling me to excel at the postgraduate level. I am now gaining experience in the commercial sector to further strengthen my practical knowledge before commencing the path towards professional qualification.
