Elizabeth Carol Elliott- MA Social Work

Where are you from and which course did you choose to study?

I’m from London and I chose to study a Masters in Social Work.

What was the teaching like on this course and did you feel nurtured and inspired by your lecturers on the course?

I felt the teaching on the course was very well planned and delivered. Each lecturer was very passionate and knowledgeable about their subject matter and were very encouraging.  Every lecture was accompanied by thorough notes and often included quizzes, time for feedback and questions and the structure of the course and the assignments were explained  from the beginning of each module. I felt the lecturers also provided ample opportunity to discuss and ask about our assignments and ways to practice uploading our final submissions, which helped especially as it has been a long time since I last studied at university and technology has changed immensely since then.

Why did you choose to study your subject area? Why did you decide upon LSBU?

I have worked alongside Social Workers for many years as a youth worker, specialising in supporting young people and children from disadvantaged and marginalised backgrounds and have always had it in the back of my mind that I would want to study to become a social worker, but have also always really enjoyed my work, so until now it just hadn’t felt like the right time for me. I initially applied to five different London universities, but after researching and going to interviews and test days, I really felt LSBU would be the best place to study, as it ranks 1st in the UK for Social Work (The Guardian, 2025).

Have you done a work placement or any work experience?

Last Semester I completed a 70-day social work placement. I was placed in a secondary Academy in Camberwell working within the safeguarding and well-being team to support the scholars in the school.

What kind of career would you like to move into What kind of law would you like to specialise in?

I want to use my qualification to become a social worker, specialising in children currently in or leaving care.

Have you take part in any extra curricular activities such as societies, sports or and social clubs while being a student at LSBU?

I tried yoga for a few weeks, but the classes then clashed with my lectures. I haven’t taken part in any other societies or clubs as I have a three year old daughter, so all my time not studying, I like to spend with her, but I have been impressed with the number of clubs there are available.

What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?

I would advise anyone thinking of studying at LSBU to apply. I am a mature student and haven’t studied for many years, but the support that LSBU has offered me has been incredible. The library offers many fantastic courses to help with your studies and everyone from lecturers to support staff are really helpful and inspiring. It feels as if everyone wants you to achieve your full potential so a lot of effort is put into helping you to achieve this. I don’t have time outside uni for clubs but there are numerous clubs and societies to choose from if you were looking to get involved outside your studies. It also puts a lot of effort and focus on inclusivity, diversity and the mental and physical health of the students, which is incredibly important.
