Daniela May Senti Vigo, BSc Psychology

Where are you from, and which course did you choose to study?

I am from West London, I chose to study Forensic Psychology.

Why did you choose LSBU?

I chose to study at LSBU because the university offered me the course I have always wanted to study, which I couldn’t find anywhere else. It allowed me to combine my interest in psychology and the criminal justice system in a practical way.

What was your inspiration or reason to study this subject?

I chose to study Forensic Psychology because I wanted to understand the interaction between mental health and crime as well as how individuals suffering from mental health issues are treated by the criminal justice system. I am also interested in analysing what causes people to commit crimes. I have always had an interest in psychology, but this course allowed me to study this in a different context that has always intrigued me.

Tell me about how the course lecturers have supported you

My course lecturers have been a steady support throughout my degree. They are extremely easy to talk to and are knowledgeable about their subject. They are warm and inviting to talk to, so you never feel embarrassed or afraid to speak with them. They are also easy to reach, getting back to you in a relatively brief time. Lecturers are more than happy to organise one-on-one meetings to best help you and have practical hands-on experience that is essential for further guidance and support.

What kind of new technologies and equipment have you learned about on your course?

I have encountered several specialised technologies whilst studying my course and had the privilege of using them, such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) and a hyper-realistic lab setting like the LSBU psychology bar and child development lab.

What skills have you learned or developed at LSBU?

At LSBU, I have learnt how to use scientific methodologies and how to use these in a lab-based setting. I have developed my critical thinking skills and improved my communication and interpersonal skills from working with other people in teams where we had to listen and cooperate with one another. I have also improved my time management and organisational skills as I had to complete multiple pieces of coursework at the same time.

Where do you see yourself in the future, and what are your goals?

I see myself working in the field of Forensic Psychology, performing research in either a laboratory or a non-academic environment.

Do you have a work experience placement, and where are you working?

As a part of my Professional Placement in Psychology module, I got the opportunity to work with Foodcycle, where I created meals for disadvantaged parents and children. It was a valuable opportunity to learn the importance of community and how this affects mental health, as well as develop soft skills such as cooking. My professor, who oversaw the module, was an immense help and guided me through challenges with ease.

What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?

I would advise people who are thinking of coming here to take all the amazing opportunities to broaden their knowledge, expand their career opportunities, and make use of the facilities on hand. There are a lot of career aids available that should be made use of, so do not be afraid to go for them!
