Award-winning success: Advancing in architectural technology with LSBU

Balancing a demanding career with academic study is no small feat, but for Greg Robson, Architectural Technology BSc (Hons) graduate, studying part time at LSBU played a key role in his professional progression. Along the way, he received industry recognition through multiple awards. His experience reflects how LSBU combines technical rigour, real-world learning and strong academic support for professionals working in the construction industry.

Why I chose LSBU

The university’s strong reputation within the construction and built environment sector, particularly its balance of academic study, practical learning and industry-focused teaching. I was especially drawn to the opportunity to develop my technical skills under the guidance of lecturers with extensive professional experience. Many of the professionals I spoke to before starting the course were LSBU graduates themselves, which gave me confidence in my decision to study there.

The part-time structure of the course, delivered one day a week, fitted well around my professional commitments and allowed me to continue working full time. This meant I could gain valuable workplace experience alongside my academic studies, while the supportive approach of the lecturers helped me apply what I was learning directly to my role.

Developing technical excellence and professional standards

The aspects of the course that contributed most to my achievements were its strong technical focus, consistent academic support and clear emphasis on professional standards. The modules required a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in construction technology and technical detailing, which helped me develop a disciplined and methodical approach to my work.

The course also encouraged independent thinking and problem-solving through structured project briefs that reflected real industry scenarios. This enabled me to produce work that was not only academically strong but also professionally relevant, which I believe played a key role in my work being recognised by CIAT, CIOB and LSBU.

Lecturer support was equally important. Clear expectations, constructive feedback and ongoing guidance helped me refine my work, maintain high standards and stay motivated while balancing full-time employment with part-time study. Overall, the course created an environment that rewarded commitment, professionalism and technical excellence.

The course's strong focus on real-world application meant that my academic studies directly supported my day-to-day responsibilities

From practice to major projects

Studying Architectural Technology at LSBU while working at KLH Architects was an extremely valuable experience. Being able to apply what I was learning directly to live projects in practice helped strengthen my understanding and build confidence quickly.

The course’s strong focus on real-world application, construction technology and industry standards meant that my academic studies directly supported my day-to-day responsibilities. Balancing work and study also helped me develop key professional skills such as time management, communication and problem-solving. Alongside the technical grounding provided by the course, these skills prepared me for progression within the industry and ultimately supported my move from KLH Architects to a major employer like Skanska.

The final project gave me a holistic understanding of a project, from initial site investigation through to detailed design

Learning that translated directly into industry

One learning experience that translated directly into my current role was the Contract Administration and Construction Law modules. These provided a strong understanding of procurement routes, contract types and the roles and responsibilities of different parties within a construction project. This knowledge is directly applicable in my role, particularly when discussing contracts, understanding project responsibilities and supporting communication between consultants and contractors.

The Final Project was also highly relevant, as it gave me a holistic understanding of a project from initial site investigation through to detailed design. This included assessing site constraints such as ecology, soil conditions and planning considerations, before developing concept and technical designs and considering construction methods and materials. The process closely reflected real industry workflows and helped me understand how design decisions impact construction, sequencing and buildability in practice.

Staff were approachable, knowledgeable and genuinely invested in students' progression

Support and opportunities at LSBU

Academic support from lecturers was a key factor in my success. Staff were approachable, knowledgeable and genuinely invested in students’ progression, providing constructive feedback and guidance throughout the course. This helped me deepen my understanding of complex topics, improve my research skills and produce high-quality coursework.

Guest lectures also played an important role, from professionals sharing their own career experiences to presentations from professional bodies such as CIAT and CIOB. These sessions offered valuable insight into what is achievable with a strong academic and professional foundation. Having industry professionals review our work also provided valuable networking opportunities and the chance to discuss my work in a professional context.

Advice for future students

I would highly recommend the part-time Architectural Technology course to anyone looking to progress their career while remaining in full-time employment. Studying for five years alongside working in the industry is undoubtedly challenging and requires dedication, but the reward of gaining a degree alongside five years of practical industry experience makes it well worth the effort.

For those who are motivated and prepared to apply what they learn on the course directly to their work, and bring their professional experience back into their studies, the course can open up significant career opportunities and provide a strong foundation for long-term progression within the construction industry.
