Architecture student John Shim named runner-up in prestigious architecture award

We’re thrilled to share that John Shim, a BA (Hons) Architecture student at LSBU, has been named runner-up in the inaugural Geoffry Powell Award for Architecture 2025 – part of the prestigious Batsford Prize!
John’s intricate design, Journey to Heaven – a physical model featuring a double helix staircase leading to a sky garden – was created as part of a Semester 1 project. It impressed the judges with its creativity and craftsmanship. But it may never have been entered at all without the encouragement of one of John’s LSBU lecturers, who recognised its potential and urged him to submit his work.
In a radio interview on BBC Sounds with Robert Elms, judge Polly Powell – proprietor of Batsford Books and daughter of the award’s namesake, renowned architect Geoffry Powell – praised John’s work:
“In a world where AI is taking over, we have to remember that the random and creative juices of young people need to be encouraged to create beautiful things. John’s model is just beautiful – it’s about a metre wide and handcrafted with immense skill.”
We caught up with John to hear more about the project, the award, and how LSBU has helped shape his journey.
