Alvira Khan, BSc (Hons) Economics with Finance
Alvira Khan is a final year student pursing BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance at LSBU Business School. She was drawn to LSBU after learning of its central London location and had won “University of the year for Graduate Employment” * two years in a row.
"The best part of LSBU is the diversity”
Alvira enjoys being part of the societies at LSBU, in particular being Secretary of the South Asian Society and says was “one of the best experiences of my life! I have met various people from different backgrounds and arranging events like Meet and Greets, the South Asian Ball Night and a trip to Winter Wonderland – all of these have given me wonderful friends and memories”.
She has helped lots of students find others to explore London with and become part of other various activities and sports clubs - “LSBU societies aren’t just there as a social platform,” she says, “it’s where friends become family. I have made some of my best friends through LSBU societies”.
Working as a Student Ambassador
As a Student Ambassador at LSBU, Alvira has had the chance to develop a range of skills: “LSBU has given me opportunities to enhance my professional development and has enriched my networks. For example, working as a Student Ambassador enabled to me meet various people; from assisting with large events like fresher’s fairs to promoting LSBU at HE fairs, I developed confidence and strengthened my communication skills. I also had the opportunity to work for the Clearing and Admissions Team which gave me a new area to explore and developed my insights in recruitment and selection processes.”
Taking part in the Network of International Business Challenge (NIBS)
Alvira took part in the Network of International Business Challenge (NIBS) which helped her boost her knowledge on international business relations, strategies and comparative management techniques - all of which directly relates to her course.
Taking part in the University Business Challenge
“We represented LSBU in the finals held in Germany and reached the Quarter Finals. We worked on a Microsoft project through the challenge and presented it in front of Tim Campbell which was one of the greatest challenges I accomplished recently. Our aim was to introduce HoloLens in the retail market. Our idea of approaching the fashion industry and using a visualised form of success story was well applauded by the Judges. As a team, we managed to capture the market trend, consumer expectations and competitive analysis to be able to model our idea into a successful project for Microsoft.
How studying BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance has helped
Working as a strategic analyst at NIBS (Network of International Business Challenge) boosted my knowledge on International business relation, strategies and comparative management techniques. The challenge of analysing a problem and preparing a professional plan through internal and external analysis within 3 hours, and then pitching it to the business owner was undoubtedly the most nerve-wracking challenge”.
“I have participated in the University Business Challenge. As a financial advisor, I had to crunch numbers to aid a Solar Panel Business Operations. We aimed to enhance its position in the market with a promising revenue stream. A thorough distribution plan was necessary to serve its products and services to countries in need of electricity emergencies as well as promote the right brand image of the company”.
Alvira is very passionate about her subject and course. “My course has prepared me to enter the market with a strategic mind and therefore forwarding my excellence at understanding financial assets and new trends in the market will fulfil my client’s requirements and enhance my potential in the business industry. I have managed to gain fundamental and sentimental information through learning financial markets, international trade, intricacies of the accounting system, global economy and Marketing etc”.
It was highly fascinating to develop an insight on historical events such as the “The Great Depression”. Scrutinising the financial crisis of 2008-09 was an intensive research yet fruitful. I realise how passionate I am about the subject as I learnt about the importance of regulations and policies set to avoid these disasters”.
