Abigail Kaggwa: LLB (Hons) Law

From a childhood passion for justice to the fast-moving world of Legal Tech, Abigail Kaggwa’s journey through LSBU is anything but ordinary. With sharp ambition, real-world experience, and a deep-rooted drive to make an impact in corporate law, she’s turning her studies into something far bigger—a career built on purpose, not just a degree.

Why did you choose to study Law?

I chose Law because, from a very young age, I have always been opinionated and strong-minded. I care about how things work, especially in terms of justice and fairness. Throughout school and higher education, I explored the idea of several different career paths, and I found that my interests and passions always steered me towards Law. Furthermore, the Law opens several different opportunities for me, as it is a path that can build a strong future.

Why did you choose to join LSBU and not another university?

LSBU felt like the right fit for me due to its convenient location—just a short commute from home. Being situated in central London is especially valuable for someone pursuing corporate law, as it's close to leading firms, courts, and legal events that help bring the subject to life. I was impressed by the course’s practical and career-focused teaching approach, which goes beyond theory. The lectures strike a strong balance between professional expertise and academic insight, making the learning experience both engaging and relevant.

Can you tell us about any placement or internship opportunities you have had?

I have not done a traditional legal placement yet, but I have been building experience in other ways. I have worked as a student rep for my seminar group, which allowed me to communicate my classmates' feedback to the module leaders. I helped with open days and have been involved in marketing projects outside of university. It has helped me build confidence, communication skills, and a better understanding of what I want to achieve long-term. I plan to take on internships and networking opportunities in my second year, especially in Legal Tech and commercial law.

How do you think LSBU is preparing you for your career?

LSBU makes Law feel accessible, the lecturers are supportive, and they care about your progress. Modules like Legal Skills and Contract Law gave me a strong foundation and helped me realise that I can succeed in my dream. I have also been encouraged to explore different pathways within law, and the open discussions we have in seminars help me to understand different opinions that I probably would not have considered otherwise. It is preparing me not just to graduate, but to think strategically about my future.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying Law?

I think it is important to know why you want to study Law. Law is challenging, but if you are willing to stay focused and put the work in, it is very rewarding. Do not compare yourself to anyone else, as everyone has different things they would like to achieve, so it is important to move at your own pace and take every opportunity to grow. Do not be afraid to ask for help—your lecturers want you to succeed.

What are your plans for when you graduate?

I want to go on to study Postgraduate at LSBU and qualify as a solicitor, ideally in corporate or commercial law, but I am also interested in Legal Tech and regulatory work. I want a career that gives me options and flexibility. I would like to grow,  evolve and keep on learning throughout my career. After qualifying I would definitely take a small break and travel for a year!
