Who can apply to South Bank Ignite?

South Bank Ignite is open to all LSBU students and recent graduates (up to three years). Regardless of your school, degree, or time at university, if you have an idea or passion for a business, you can apply.

All ideas are welcome – whether it’s for a business, freelance service, social enterprise, or side-hustle.

All stages of the idea and business development are eligible! No business knowledge or experience is necessary.

Can I apply to South Bank Ignite? What are the deadlines?

Eligible individuals (LSBU students and recent graduates) may join the South Bank Ignite competition in the Round 1 application between October and January.

Unfortunately, individuals can not join the competition if they miss this Round 1 application deadline.

Why should I join South Bank Ignite? What’s in it for me?

South Bank Ignite offers you:

- An opportunity to express and test your passion or business idea,

- Networks and connections with other LSBU entrepreneurs as well as industry experts,

- How your idea or business solves the problem.

Don’t forget to also introduce yourself (and your team) and how you are in the best position to lead this business idea forward.

Hult Prize – Win $1 million to solve the world's most pressing issues with your innovative social venture

The Hult Prize challenges young people around the world to solve the planet's most pressing issues through social entrepreneurship – and giving them $1 million to do it!

Cost: Free

Prizes: Every year, one team receives $1M USD in funding to make their idea a reality.

Award Categories: You can pitch any idea you have for a social enterprise, as long as it is world-changing and aligned with at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Eligibility: To apply, you need to be:

  • You must currently be a student enrolled in a degree seeking program.
  • Teams must be between 3 - 5 members. All students must be from the same university, with an additional option to have one, that can be from a different university.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age to compete.

Doorbell of Dream – Ring the doorbell for feedback and publicity from Richard Branson and other top entrepreneurs

HelpBnk and Virgin StartUp’s Doorbell of Dreams is now a permanent opportunity at the Virgin Hotels London-Shoreditch. Ring the doorbell to pitch your idea in 60 seconds. You may receive feedback from leading entrepreneurs and investors, social media exposure, and/or a free business advisory call.

Cost: Free

Prizes: Selected pitches may receive one or more of the following:

  • Feedback from leading UK entrepreneurs, delivered via HelpBnk and associated social media channels.
  • Publicity: Selected pitches may be featured to an online audience via HelpBnk, Doorbell of Dreams, and partners' digital channels.
  • Free business advisory call: One call per winning pitch, to be booked through the Virgin StartUp community.
  • Other spot prizes, grants, or business support may be offered at the judges' discretion, subject to availability.

Criteria: The pitches will be judged based on originality, impact, and potential.

Eligibility:

  • Open to UK residents aged 18 or over at the time of entry.
  • Individuals under 18 may participate only as part of a team or entry led by someone aged 18 or over (the "responsible adult"), who must submit the entry and provide their own contact information.
  • The responsible adult must obtain written parental/guardian consent for the participation and publicity of any under-18 team members, and must provide this to HelpBnk on request.
  • Only one pitch per day per person or team.

The Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation Scholarship Award – Funding education and careers ambitions

The Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation Scholarship Award supports students working to close the diversity, equity and inclusions gaps in their future aspirations.

Deadline: Tuesday, 30 June 2026 at 5pm

Cost: Free

What’s included:

  • Funding to pursue your own education and career ambitions.
  • Exclusive mentoring from leaders in their fields
  • Work experience (depending upon availability and COVID).
  • Reverse mentoring
  • Networking
  • VIP attendance to our educational diversity leadership lecture event(s)

Award Categories: Scholarships are available across many fields of study and sectors. This relates to your future aspirations. These include:

  • Law
  • Finance & business
  • STEAM
  • Medical
  • Multi-sector (for all other industries)
  • Kidney Healthcare
  • Disability and Neurodiversity

Eligibility: Students from all races (black, white and asian), nationalities, and social backgrounds are welcome. To be eligible for the scholarship programme, the students must meet all the conditions below: ​

  • Applicants must meet all the entry requirements for their full-time course
  • Scholarships are only available for new students. Previous scholarship winners are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants must enrol as full-time students in the UK. Part-time students are not eligible to apply
  • Have good academics and/or aspirations to achieve good academics
  • Be able to commit the time and effort to complete the scholarship programme
  • All scholarship applicants must have a demonstrable and genuine interest in diversity. ​

Canva The Small Business Pitch Challenge - 3 months of Canva Pro and £4,000 business grant

The Small Business Pitch Challenge is helping small UK ventures (under 50 employees) pitch their business to Canva and industry leaders for the change to win funding, mentorship, and national exposure.

Deadline: Sunday, 12 July 2026 at 11:59PM BST

Cost: Free

Prizes: For everyone, prizes include 3-months of Canva Pro for free, exclusive startup and founder sessions, and practical tools to help tell your business story.

Top 5 winners receive:

  • £4,000 business grant
  • 1:1 mentorship from industry leaders
  • The chance to host an event at Canva HQ in London
  • National exposure across Canva channels

Judging Criteria: The panel will select the winners based on the strength and originality of the business or idea; clarity of storytelling and communication; creativity and effective use of Canva; growth ambition and future potential; and overall quality and impact of the submission

James Dyson Award – Make a name for yourself as an inventor

The James Dyson Award is an international design award open to current and recent design engineering students who think differently and want to create products that work better.

Deadline: Thursday, 16 July 2026

Cost: Free

Prizes: As well as winning a cash prize, participants gain media exposure to kick-start your career, new networks and communities, and the experience launch your own business.

  • National Winner: £5,000
  • International Runners Up: £5,000
  • Sustainability Winner: £30,000
  • International Winner: £30,000

Eligibility:

  • The James Dyson Award is open to current university students of engineering, product design and industrial design – and those who have graduated in these subjects in the last four years.
  • All entrants must have undertaken their studies in one of the participating countries or regions.

IGNITE 2026 - Building a fairer future with a £50,000 prize pot

IGNITE is a UK-wide competition and impact accelerator for social entrepreneurs, backing emerging, mission-led founders to build ventures that deliver real public benefit.

Deadline: Sunday, 9 August

Cost: Free

Prizes: Prizes include:

  • A place on a curated six-week Social Venture Accelerator for 16 of the UK’s most promising mission-led founders
  • 1-2-1 coaching from experts
  • Up to £20,000 in equity-free funding for the top 6 finalists

  • Organisations applying to Ignite must have a turnover and/or previous funding of under £100,000.
  • Applicants must be available for a live pitching final in October based in London.
  • Organisations must have a plan to generate 50% or more of their income through trading within 3 years.
  • Applicants must be social enterprises built for impact with a legal structure to support the commitment to social change.

The Young Entrepreneurs Challenge - Make your mark and win £10,000

The Young Entrepreneurs Challenge, brought to you by Verizon and Unloc, supports 16–25-year-olds with world-impacting business ideas get off the ground or boost it to the next level.

Deadline: Friday, 9 October

Cost: Free

Prizes: Prizes include:

  • One-to-one mentorship to help create an individual plan focused on key priorities
  • The overall winner will receive a £10,000 grant to help accelerate their business idea or start-up.
  • The winner will also get a trip to the One Young World 2027 Global Summit in Tokyo.

Judging Criteria: Applications will be judged on three key factors:

  1. Is it innovative and unique?
  2. Does it improve sustainability or improve people’s lives? Does it meet or sustain a UNSDG?
  3. Is it viable and can the plan achieve what it states it will do??

Eligibility:

Applicants must be:

  • Between the ages of 16 and 25 years on 1st November 2026.
  • Residents and/or citizens of the U.K. or the continent of Europe.
  • Previous entrants are welcome to re-enter, but previous finalists are not eligible.

Business proposals must:

  • Be legal in all mainland European countries.
  • Not have the purpose of political lobbying.
  • Be the applicant’s own idea.
  • Not infringe on the copyright, patent or intellectual property of others.
  • Businesses must be pre-start (not yet trading), no more than three years old, and have not had an annual turnover of more than £100,000
