Overview
This is a MA Top-Up course following a successful completion of the Pg Cert and Pg Dip study pathways validated by the LSBU. The course allows the individuals to form foundations and provide an evolution in their knowledge related to spiritual and pastoral care within Healthcare Chaplaincy context. This will include an understanding of the specific contexts and themes that may emerge within a community.
The course will be appropriate for those who are already chaplains but wish to enhance their knowledge, skills, and practice further to increase their learning and promote their professional recognition and widen their employment opportunities to 7 Healthcare Chaplaincy in managerial, consultancy and specialized roles.
Likewise, other healthcare professionals and students in fields such as social healthcare, clinical psychology and medicine can also access this course to develop their spiritual and religious competences as part of their required multi-cultural competences for effective and ethical delivery of their services.
This is a one-year part-time course from September to August and it does not require students to do a dissertation but rather to complete a work-based portfolio to qualify for the MA award.

MA (Top-Up) in Healthcare Chaplaincy and Wellbeing
- Module 7: Spiritual Care, Wellbeing and Spiritual First Aid (20 Credits, L7)
This module explores the capabilities and competent advanced practice in spiritual care and wellbeing, demonstrable in 4 pillars – namely spiritual practice, leadership and management, education, and research. The module analyses innovative spiritual care to enhance people’s lived experience and wellbeing, and spiritual first aid and spiritual care in complex traumatic situations. - Module 8: Improving Chaplaincy Practice within the Workplace (20 Credits, L7)
This module equips individuals with the advanced knowledge and skills to examine and evaluate the theology and evidential basis of their faith/belief and how this relates to their communities. The module has a strong emphasis in enabling the individual to deeply apply their advanced knowledge in practice by evidencing their professional practice. The module enables learners to critically reflect and apply learning in context and also promotes the creation of new knowledge and evidence-based skills in spiritual healthcare.

Employability
This course will enable graduates to increase their learning and promote their professional recognition and widen their employment opportunities to apply for managerial, consultancy and specialized roles at band 7 positions in Healthcare Chaplaincy within the NHS or elsewhere. So, students can enter the professional chaplaincy market with this qualification.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to develop some key skills including improving communication, IT, literacy, and research skills and to be able to apply for further study.
