College of Health and Life Sciences
Life sciences laboratories consist of a range of facilities across our Borough Road site. In Biomedical Science there are several spaces dedicated to research-housing specialist equipment including Flow cytometer, CO2 incubators, cell imaging system and a variety of microscopes. Undergraduate facilities include a dedicated microbiology suite, equipment for blood analysis, as well as cell and tissue preparation areas. Our analytical laboratories host a range of equipment including Gas chromatography mass spectrometers, high performance liquid chromatography systems, scanning electron microscope, genetic analyser and bomb calorimeters for the analysis of samples by investigators in pharmaceutical science, forensic science and other disciplines.
Our forensic science students have the use of a dedicated fully furnished flat for crime scene investigations as well as specialist equipment including cyanoacrylate fuming cabinet, video spectral comparator, glass refractive index measurement system and elemental composition comparator.
Alongside this sits the Human Performance areas which incorporate the biomechanics, physiology and gait analysis laboratories.
The psychology facilities include a range of observational facilities, the bar lab, bio-psychological recording equipment (BIOPAC) for the collection of a wide range of physiological data and an eye tracking laboratory.
The National Bakery School – A wide range of dedicated spaces designed to give a hands on experience to specific areas of the industry, these include two bakery rooms with proving ovens, baking ovens, mixers, work benches and pastry brake – a specialist device with contra-rotating rollers that works pastry and reduces its thickness, a practical study room dedicated to the production of fermented goods, a practical study room for the delicate process of chocolate making and tempering machines to keep the chocolate at a perfect temperature for handling and a practical study room for confectionary making, the production of gateaux and associated finishing techniques.
The Health and Social Care Specific facilities are located at Southwark and Croydon. With over 45 spaces, the Clinical Skills and Simulation labs are dedicated spaces for Clinical Skills and Simulation in, Adult, child, mental health and learning and disability Nursing; Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Sports Rehabilitation and Therapeutic and Diagnostic Radiography.
The simulation suites are cutting-edge spaces designed to replicate real hospital wards and provide an immersive learning environment where healthcare professionals can prepare for clinical placements and undertake skills practice in a safe, supportive setting. Our suites have the latest healthcare simulation technology. These flexible and immersive rooms support a wide range of clinical education scenarios.
Our Clinical Skills Laboratories are purpose-built educational spaces that support hands-on learning. Designed for procedural skill development using anatomical models, they allow students and healthcare professionals to develop, refine, and assess clinical competencies in a safe, controlled setting before applying them in simulated practice and placement.
We have a cluster of fully functional clinics designed to mirror sports rehabilitation and physiotherapy environments.
The VR/Anatomy learning space is designed to blend immersive technology with traditional anatomical learning. This setup supports both digital and tactile exploration of human anatomy, ideal for medical education, allied health training, or advanced biology instruction.
