Stephen Shapiro is an experienced lawyer and company secretary with extensive expertise in legal, corporate governance and regulatory matters. Throughout his career, he has held a number of senior leadership positions, including Group General Counsel at Barclays, where he was responsible for overseeing the organisation’s global Legal function and served as a member of the Group Executive Committee.
Prior to this, Stephen served as Group Company Secretary and Deputy General Counsel of SABMiller plc. He began his career in private practice, first as a partner in a law firm in South Africa and later specialising in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions at Hogan Lovells in the UK.
Stephen has made significant contributions to the governance profession, serving on the Executive Committee of the GC100, the association of General Counsel and Company Secretaries working in FTSE 100 companies, including as Vice-Chair. He also previously served as Chairman of ICC UK’s Committee on Anti-Corruption.
