Stephen Marston has held a variety of senior positions in the education and health services. His early career was in the Civil Service, including four years as Director for Institutions at the Higher Education Funding Council for England. His last Civil Service role was Director-General for, variously, lifelong learning, further education, higher education and skills across three Government Departments.
He moved to become Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire from 2011 to 2023. Following his retirement, he has taken on a portfolio of non-executive directorships, including Chair of South Hampshire Colleges Group and Board member of the Student Loans Company, the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research in Wales, the University of Derby, and the West London NHS Trust. He lives in Southwark.
