London South Bank University (LSBU)'s Academy of Sport is partnering with exciting new charity Silverfit to deliver new 'Silver Thursday' fitness sessions for the over-45s.

From 8 October, LSBU’s team of Sports Ambassadors will run a weekly ‘silver session’ on Thursday mornings in conjunction the leading fitness and lifestyle charity Silverfit. Thanks to funding from the Elephant and Castle Community fund, the sessions cost just £1 for over-45s. Each ‘silver session’ will include a gentle warm up before the choice of an hour of indoor cycling, badminton, a group gym session or Nordic walking.

Silverfit sport sessions are designed to encourage older people to regain or to maintain lifelong fitness whilst also socialising and having a good time. The sessions provide a catalyst for many other qualify of life benefits that go beyond improved fitness, such as making new friends and having fun.

In addition to the new silver sessions, LSBU’s Academy of Sport will also provide a monitoring and evaluation service for Silverfit’s activities in the Southwark area, including its work with sports clubs, housing associations, local GP’s, health authorities and local councils.

Jameelah Brinson, Sports Development Manager at LSBU, commented: “LSBU’s Academy of Sport plays an important civic role in providing accessible, affordable and high quality sports provision in the local community. I’m very pleased to be working with Silverfit to develop our services for older people, to extend our community sports programme and to encourage new people into sport, no matter what their age.”

Eddie Brocklesby, CEO of Silverfit, added: “We know from experience in Burgess Park how much fun the Silver Sessions are, and how important it is to have fun, whilst getting just that bit more physically active. I didn’t start until I was 50 years old, and now, at 72 years I know it is never too late to make that change and have fun too. We are really looking forward to working with LSBU, and know our Silverfitters will love the facilities, and the enthusiasm of the LSBU Sports Ambassadors. Silver Thursdays offer an ideal inter-generational formula and we are so grateful to the Elephant and Castle Community fund for enabling this innovative project.”

LSBU’s ‘Silver Thursday Sessions’ will run at the Academy of Sport, 103 Borough Road, London, SE1 0AA on Thursdays from 8 October, between 10-11.30am (with socialising and refreshments afterwards). For more information, please call 020 7815 7812 or email sportscentre@lsbu.ac.uk
