This course is designed for graduates looking into transition into project management roles, either in their current industry or a new field. Students on this course come from diverse academic and professional backgrounds including engineering, sciences, design, accounting, architecture, and social sciences. We welcome applicants from all disciplines who are motivated to pursue a career in project management.

Applicants to the FT MSc Project Management will be required to demonstrate the following:

At least a UK 2:2 undergraduate degree or equivalent in a business-related subject (e.g., management science, economics, business analytics, etc).

At least a UK 2:2 undergraduate degree or equivalent with relevant professional experience.

We welcome qualifications from around the world. International students should hold a recognised English language qualification such as an IELTS test score of at least 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in any one component).

Transfer credit allows credit awarded by another HE Institution to contribute to the credit required for a London South Bank award. Applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Consideration of any request for transfer credit will only be confirmed against a transcript of credit or award certification and particular attention will be paid to: the subjects studied, the grades achieved and number of attempts at the assessments. Maximum transfer credit allowed will be 60 credits

  • Principles of Project Organising (Core, 20 credits): Introduces the foundational concepts of project management, focusing on organising principles, project lifecycle, and the methodologies for effective project initiation and planning.
  • People and Performance (Core, 20 credits): Focuses on developing soft skills crucial for people management in project settings, including conflict resolution, leadership, and communication, aiming to enhance team performance and governance in diverse environments.
  • Quantitative Project Control Systems (Core, 20 credits): Equips students with quantitative modelling skills for financial and project planning, scheduling, and controlling, applying these techniques to real-world business projects.
  • Managing Risk and Change (Core, 20 credits): Addresses the strategies and techniques for managing risk and facilitating change within projects, emphasising business risk, change management, and crisis management with the use of data manipulation for decision support.

We understand the immense value that real-world experience adds to academic learning. That's why we offer the MSc Project Management with an option to enrol in an embedded internship programme. This unique opportunity allows students to immerse themselves in a professional business environment for ten to twelve months, applying the critical aspects of their course to actual work settings. Teaching and Assessment

The course utilises an assessment strategy comprised by a diverse range of methods, to evaluate student learning outcomes across key knowledge, skills, and abilities required of project management professionals.   Each 20-credit module requires approximately 200 hours of study comprising a mix of contact hours and self-managed learning.  

Lectures, Seminars, and Workshops: The course utilises interactive lectures to introduce core theoretical concepts, which are further explored in depth through seminars and workshops. These sessions encourage discussion, debate, and collaborative learning, enriched by the input of external experts who provide insights into specialist fields.
Applied Learning: Emphasising practical application, the course includes case studies, simulations, and live collaborative projects, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world business scenarios. This hands-on approach not only enhances comprehension but is critical in developing the practical competencies required for effective project management.

Research and Entrepreneurial Engagement: The course fosters a culture of research and innovation, encouraging students to pursue their interests in these areas. Opportunities to engage with the LSBU Business Solutions Centre and the Clarence Centre for entrepreneurship are integral to this, helping students to develop and refine their entrepreneurial ideas.

Professional Body Interaction: Active engagement with professional bodies such as the APM and PMI provides valuable industry insights and access to contemporary resources, ensuring that the learning experience is directly relevant to the demands of the project management profession.

Assessment Strategy

The course comprises 180 credits in total, with each of the six core modules assessed through a variety of relevant coursework assignments, including presentations, essays, and group work, contributing 20 credits per module. This diverse set of assessments is designed to evaluate students’ mastery of the material, as well as their ability to apply their knowledge in practical contexts.

Upon completion of the core modules, students are tasked with undertaking a Capstone Project, a significant piece of individual research or project work worth 60 credits (or 30% of the degree). The Capstone Project serves as a culminating academic endeavour, enabling students to demonstrate their research, analytical, and project management skills by developing an original piece of work.

Personal Tutoring Agreement

Each student benefits from the support of a personal tutor, who provides individual academic guidance and pastoral support throughout the course. Personal tutors are dedicated to assisting students in navigating their academic journey, offering regular appointments to discuss progress, address challenges, and support personal and professional development. This tailored support ensures that students have the resources and guidance necessary to achieve their full potential.

Personal Tutoring

As a postgraduate student in the Business School, your personal development and wellbeing is very important to us, so we have developed a personal tutoring system that is tailored to your individual and group needs.

Firstly, you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to you on a 1:1 basis as well as facilitating group personal tutoring sessions, designed to enhance your academic and personal development within your postgraduate degree programme.

In addition to an allocated personal tutor, there will also be a personal tutor available ‘on call’ in a designated room, called ‘Talk’, for confidential 1:1 pastoral care meetings every day of the academic semester from 9am to 8pm. This personal tutor can be seen by appointment or within a few minutes in order to assist you with any concerns that you may have.
