Overview

The focus of this module is the holistic care of children and young people who are at risk in a variety of settings. The health care professional must work inter-professionally understanding the differing roles and responsibilities of each health care professional when it comes to safeguarding children and young people.

Entry requirements

  • 240 Credit points of which no more than 120 are at level 5 and no less than 120 at level 6 or equivalent. In exceptional circumstances if an individual has evidence of recent professional learning they may enter with 60 Credit points at level 6 or equivalent.
  • Registration on Part 1 of the NMC professional register or equivalent
  • Registration on Health and Care Professions Council
  • Student support for studying at Masters level is to be discussed with the pathway advisor. Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to consider the workshop: Preparation for Masters Level Study, which can be found on the CPPD prospectus.

This module provides focus and direction for professionals who wish to develop their expertise in recognising children and young people at risk and managing child protection issues. It is essential that all professionals working with children and young people have the knowledge and skills that will enable them to provide a safe and optimal standard of care. The module therefore allows students to develop their current practice and prepare for future roles, supporting their employability and career progression.

  • 4000 word critical appraisal.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:       

  • Critically evaluate the social, cultural and environmental risk factors that contribute to a child or young person’s vulnerability to child abuse or neglect
  • Critically appraise the guidelines which govern the removal of a child from their parents and explore the implications with regards to your practice

Intellectual skills:

  • Critically analyse the evidence available on effective identification and assessment of children and young people at risk
  • Examine the role of the statutory and voluntary agencies involved in safeguarding and protecting children and young people in our society and the debate the implications this has on your practice

Practical Skills:

  • Critically evaluate the effectiveness of communication with the multi-disciplinary team when managing a case of possible child abuse or neglect and identify the barriers to this
  • Critically appraise record keeping and reports that could be used in legal proceedings and the discuss the implications for your practice

Transferable skills:

  • Assessment skills
  • Working collaboratively with families and safeguarding teams
