Course Content

What will I learn?

This course has been recently been revalidated to give you the most modern education possible, ensuring you graduate with the skills future employers will be looking for. AI concepts and applications are embedded throughout the course, enabling students to explore how technology is transforming how economic data is gathered, analysed and communicated. Comprehensive curriculum update that will turn you into the analytical, business-oriented and socially aware economist that employers want, with a new integration of AI tools and technologies throughout the programme, including Bloomberg financial software certification.

Modules in management and business strategy will show you how the talents of the economist suit you to responsible, decision-making jobs, while Second Year modules such as Economic Policy Analysis and the Digital Economy are notable examples of where theoretical and technical skill meets social awareness.

The Analytical Economist focuses on the skills you will need to understand and succeed in the job market when you graduate. With plenty of input from practitioners, you will work on a ‘live brief’ jointly designed with an industry professional, ensuring the skills and knowledge you will acquire are current and in demand.

Then there are the opportunities to understand modern finance and data analysis, in Financial Econometrics, The Digital Economy and Global Finance and Technology. Bottom line, there’s so much variety on this course, reflecting the broad nature of the professional applications of a degree in Economics.

You will also be able to choose from one optional module in your final year. These include:

  • Strategic Project Management
  • Coaching and Talent Development
  • Data Analytics
  • Brand Management
  • Advanced Financial Accounting
  • Development Economics
  • Global Finance & Technology
  • Corporate Finance and Risk Management

This module introduces students to the elementary principles of finance and economics that are relevant for business decision making, including the practical application of these principles in making optimal business decisions.

This module develops students’ understanding of the essential microeconomic and macroeconomic theories, which are the bedrock of the economic concepts and methods studied in the Finance and the Economy module. The emphasis of this module is upon the theoretical frameworks underpinning the business applications of economics in facilitating the decisions of policymakers, managers, and entrepreneurs in a variety of situations, as well as the implications of the macro-open economy on the operations of modern firms.

Business Mathematics introduces students to the fundamental mathematical techniques that are employed in all fields of Economics. The module augments each technique with specific real-world examples. These examples allow students to develop an appreciation of how mathematical techniques can be applied in the analysis of business.

This module introduces students to the basic concepts of business management in organisations. It gives students an appreciation of the complexities of organisations that affect employee behaviour within them in a local and global context. It introduces them to key human resource management concepts.  The module provides an introduction to management, organisational behaviour and people management theories and practices.

This module equips students with essential quantitative skills for handling, analysing, and presenting numerical information in business contexts. Students will learn to interpret data, identify underlying patterns and narratives, and use evidence-based reasoning to justify and support business decisions. The module emphasises practical application using industry-standard tools such as Microsoft Excel, preparing students for the data-driven demands of modern workplaces.

This module introduces students to the basics of strategy in modern business and management. Students analyse real business cases to understand what organisations do, why they make certain strategic choices, and how these choices affect performance and operations.  The module covers key tools and frameworks used to analyse industries, markets, and organisations, and shows how strategy is developed and applied at different levels, including global, corporate, business, and functional levels. Students learn to connect strategy theories to real business situations, evaluate an organisation’s performance, and assess how strategies are implemented in practice. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply strategic thinking to real-world business problems and suggest practical strategic options.

This module provides insights into graduate enterprise, entrepreneurship and employability competences, together with career development for economics students. It teaches students essential professional skills of self-awareness building, career exploration, job search, succeeding in recruitment and selection processes and teamwork, enabling them to secure employment and thrive in the world of work. Moreover, through engagement with real organizational partners, students develop enterprise competencies including opportunity recognition, problem-solving, and value creation alongside professional skills. The module combines reflective professional development with applied economics, through a live brief developed in collaboration with a private or public sector organisation, encouraging students to integrate career development with authentic value-creation experiences.

This module is an introduction to the basic principles of contemporary business finance. It seeks to provide an elementary knowledge of the subject, simultaneously highlighting the links between essential concepts of accounting, finance and economics, and practical financial management; students would thereby be provided with a firm foundation in the theoretical as well as practical aspects of business finance.

This model builds on the content of the level 4 module Economic Concepts. It will give a broader understanding of market structures, the decision making of the firm and consumer choice.  It will expand both the general understanding and formal modelling ability of students in these areas with use of general equilibrium theories, Market equilibrium and disequilibrium situations and Game Theory Tools.  They will be introduced to real world data within microeconomics and be expected to manipulate and work with it. This will require a low-level use of tools like Excel & STATA which will be recapped from previous modules in Economic Concepts & Business Mathematics as well as the module Introduction to Econometrics.

This module will help students to learn how to use economics to understand and articulate reasoned views on some of the most pressing policy problems facing our societies: inequality, financial instability, the future of work, climate change, wealth creation and innovation. It addresses positive and normative dimensions as well as political-economy constraints.

Macroeconomic modelling builds on the content of the level 4 Economic Concepts module. It will cover goods market, labour market and financial markets in both the short and medium run as well as introducing growth over the long run.  The module will be more technical than the modules at level 4 and will present the models that are used to understand the interaction between key economic indicators like income, inflation, interest rate, economic growth, unemployment among others. This work will be presented through the IS-LM model, the Philips curve, Okun’s law and introduces the basic Solow Growth Model.

This module introduces students to the principles and practice of econometric analysis using real-world economic and financial data. Students develop an understanding of regression-based modelling and learn how to apply econometric techniques using statistical software such as STATA. As part of the module, students will be guided to complete the Bloomberg Spreadsheet Analysis (BSA) certificate (or equivalent) and will receive training on downloading and preparing data from Bloomberg (or equivalent) for empirical analysis.

Optional placement year in industry (if you choose not to do a placement year, you will take the modules listed below in your third year).

Microeconomic Strategy develops a deep understanding of several fundamental models in microeconomics using formal, and often mathematically rigorous, methods. This approach develops students’ analytical skills and intuition, as well as creativity in applying these models to novel real-world situations.

The module will apply the economic theory learnt in macroeconomic modelling to a range of macro policy issues, such the control of inflation and central bank independence, growth and innovation, and international policy coordination. The emphasis will be on applied issues and their institutional context.

The module examines the psychological underpinnings of economic behaviour and in particular when this behaviour deviates from predicted economic theory.  It introduces the necessary skills within economics to test theoretical predictions and hypothesis. This includes designing and running lab-based experiments as well as structuring clear testable predictions. This process will expand their understanding of the scientific method within economics.  Alongside this practical application the module will introduce students to recent behavioural theories that have emerged to explain the empirical observations (both from existing literature and their own research), and will discuss the implications for economics, business and politics.

This module supports students to complete an independent, small-scale research or applied project over two semesters. Students identify a researchable problem aligned to their course (and/or their work place or aspirations), engage critically with topic-specific sources, design a feasible and ethical study using typical methodologies of the chosen topic, and communicate findings in an academically credible and professionally useful output. The module consolidates degree learning by developing research design, data handling, analysis, project management, and communication skills, supporting progression to employment and/or postgraduate study.

* Modules are subject to review and change throughout the year.

Teaching and Assessment

How will I learn?

A better question might be how do you learn best? The course is assessed through 100% coursework with no exams, allowing you to demonstrate your learning through practical, applied, and industry-relevant assessments. This gives you the freedom to choose your preferred assessment method on most modules, giving greater flexibility and helping them perform at your best while showcasing your knowledge and skills.

There are interactive lectures, small-group seminar discussions and exercises, well-designed games to help you to understand economics in a fun way, live briefs set by industry practitioners, group presentations for formative feedback, case studies (including self-developed cases), and sessions designed to build both your practical and theoretical understanding of the kind of economic principles that will make you valuable to employers.

Variety, engagement and entertainment are key to the way Economics is taught at LSBU, with learning often continuing beyond the lecture hall. Whether that’s through extracurricular activities such as joining our Economics Society, or through the kind of guest lectures and networking events that can only come from studying in Central London, there are plenty of chances to grow and develop both professionally and personally.

You can also expect a variety of assessment methods, including essays and reflections, timed workshop sessions, presentations, and a research project, for which you will have a personal supervisor. You’ll put skills to use working in our fully equipped Bloomberg Suite, monitoring markets and analysing financial data in real-time, while also getting hands-on experience with a range of other industry-standard software and tools.

“The thing I like most about my course was how it shifted the way that I think analytically, by presenting me with intriguing assessments and by making use of the interesting conversations I have had with lecturers about different topics related to my studies or even other fields.” -  Devid, Economics Alumni
