As the beginning of your Media Production course approaches, we understand that you might be looking for ways to enrich your knowledge and experience over the summer. Our academic team has put together a list of recommended activities, reading materials, and resources to prepare you for your studies.

These are all friendly recommendations - it's completely up to you how much (or little) you decide to do!

  • Sight & Sound Magazine – Stay up to date with critical perspectives on cinema, often includes interviews with editors and filmmakers.
  • In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch – A must-read on the philosophy and technique of film editing.
  • Fine Cuts: The Art of European Film Editing edited by Roger Crittenden - Roger Crittenden reveals the experiences of many of the greatest living European film editors through his warm and perceptive interviews which offer a unique insight into the art of editing.
  • Notes on the Cinematograph by Robert Bresson – Iconic French director Robert Bresson reflects on his theory and practice as a filmmaker and artist.
  • Rebel Without a Crew by Robert Rodriguez – The story of the making of Rodriguez’s debut film.
  • On Film-making: An Introduction to the Craft of the Director by Alexander Mackendrick - An invaluable analysis of the director's art and craft, from one of the most revered of all film school directors.

  • BFI Future Film Network – Designed for young creatives starting in film.
  • Join ScreenSkills – For access to UK industry resources, training and potential bursaries.
  • Film London - stay up to date with events and schemes organised by the capitals film organisation.
