Marketing student and keen photographer Romans took his first step into the world of business during his summer internship at LSBU, and hasn't looked back

After enjoying a marketing module during his hospitality course at college, Roman applied to study at LSBU and has found the university facilities and teaching quality to be second to none.

"I'd recommend LSBU to anyone because of the great location, the brand new sports facilities and the standards of teaching. The marketing lecturers are really friendly and supportive, and the course is really creative, while also providing us with the theory."

Turning a hobby into a business

A keen photographer, Roman has built his own photography business while studying at LSBU and credits his course for helping him turn his hobby into a commercial opportunity.

"I've built my business out of one of my passions so it's something I really enjoy doing. I provide photography for financial and real estate businesses, I have around three clients at the moment, and I sell my own images for canvas print. My degree has helped develop my business sense and build my confidence - and has given me the know-how to promote my services."

An internship with variety

Roman applied for an internship in the marketing department at LSBU and was one of four successful applicants from his course. He gained a thorough understanding of the workings of a marketing department after rotating around each area throughout the 9 week placement.

"I worked on surveys and reports during my time in market research, wrote a UCAS profile for the university in marketing, compiled a newsletter in Newsweaver while I worked in PR and communications and assisted with the Clarence Centre official opening plans in events – among many other things. The variety of the internship was excellent and helped me figure out what I enjoy most."

Seeing it from the other side

"I wasn't sure what to expect going into the internship because I had never thought about marketing in the higher education sector – as a student I receive the marketing messages without realising. But I discovered the university is a business too, and students are the customers."

Next steps

Roman is interested in experiencing the agency side of marketing and hopes to secure some experience with a graduate scheme.

"My plan is to apply for a graduate scheme during my final year studying at LSBU. I want to work in London, or secure a job to Moscow, New York or Sydney."
