Mohammad Khan, alumnus, BEng (Hons) Petroleum Engineering
Mohammad's studies have led him down an adventurous career path, and he's excited about taking on new challenges in the oil and gas industryMohammad Faisal Khan joined LSBU after initially studying an Oil and Gas Engineering Diploma in Kuwait. Looking to take his studies to a higher level, he was able to transfer credits from his diploma across to his degree, meaning he began studying with us in the second year of the course.
Understanding and appreciation
“I knew I wanted to become a field engineer, and my degree in Petroleum Engineering at LSBU was a great help in me securing my current role,” says Mohammad, who is now a Senior Field Engineer for Baker Hughes in Kuwait. “I gained an understanding and appreciation of the entire process of petroleum production, from exploration to production.”
Valuable knowledge
As part of his course, Mohammad studied the broader elements of the industry, including petroleum geoscience, drilling, reservoir engineering and petroleum production engineering. “Studying those topics gave me plenty of knowledge that was of value to potential employers,” he says. “I gained knowledge of completion, cementation, artificial lift, stimulation methods, petroleum systems, well log interpretation and well testing.”
In addition to his academic studies, Mohammad also undertook a number of projects that helped him to develop transferrable skills, as well as those from other engineering fields and skills in different software programmes.
Applicable skills
“The experience really sharpened my desire to continue my career in the oil and gas industry,” says Mohammad. “It gave me a strong base of knowledge in an area I’m really fascinated in, and I loved that the focus wasn’t just on hydrocarbon theory but also involved a lot of calculations – which I strongly believe gave me the skills that Baker Hughes were looking for, as I frequently have to apply my mathematical skills to solve problems on a daily basis.”
I love every aspect of my job - it’s an adventurous career, where I travel to different parts of the country and help clients to find energy resources, and I work with people from different backgrounds and experience.

Fast-moving industry
In his three years at Baker Hughes, Mohammad has seen for himself what a fast-moving industry oil and gas can be – and how the aptitude for life-long learning he developed at LBU can serve him well in the future. “To excel in this industry, you need extraordinary leadership skills, as well as technical knowledge,” he remarks. “I want to develop my career to its full potential, and to do that I need to expand and enhance my decision making skills so that I can manage budgets in an uncertain environment.”
