Gary Lee, FdSc Clinical Technology

As a Prosthetic Technician, Gary Lee is used to working as part of a team delivering vital rehabilitation and support to patients with long-term illness

Gary's role is quite diverse - technicians need to employ a mix of clinical, technical and project management skills, while remaining sensitive to patient care.

The industry is continually advancing, embracing innovative technology to enhance clinical techniques and improve the patient experience.

First of its kind…

Keen to develop, Gary signed up for the FdSc Clinical Technology at LSBU, the first university in the UK to offer a part time degree course focusing specifically on prosthetic, orthotic and special seating technician training.

Gary studies part-time while working, so he's been able to put theory into practice right away, and the opportunity to work 'behind the scenes' means he's gained "valuable insight, knowledge and understanding of roles… which are usually inaccessible."

I am particularly proud of completing a diverse portfolio of work including live business projects, 3D printing, CAD drawings as well as designing, creating and manufacturing innovative designs with genuine market potential.

Support from staff and students

Gary hadn't studied formally for a few years, but was able to apply his transferable skills and expertise throughout the course.  He also praised the teaching: "The quality and variety of lectures and guest lectures really fed my enthusiasm, and lecturers have been very supportive."

The student group really bonded: "The social side of the course has been brilliant too, I've met with many others working in the industry and gained insight into how other techniques and workplaces compare – a great network of people who I'll keep in touch with."

So, why LSBU?

Thinking in terms of his career, Gary knows the FdSc will recognise the unique contribution provided by Prosthetic Technicians and is working towards the role of Technical Assistant Practitioner.

I would recommend studying at LSBU – the course has enabled me to gain a deep understanding of clinical technology giving me the best possible chance of realising my potential and improving the lives of patients in the future.
