LSBU Pro Vice-Chancellor speaks on teaching and learning excellence at UUK conference
Prof. Shân Wareing, LSBU Pro Vice-Chancellor, gave a keynote address on the subject of teaching excellence at a recent Universities UK conferenceProfessor Shân Wareing, London South Bank University (LSBU)’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, recently addressed an audience of university senior leaders at a conference on innovation and excellence in higher education.
The conference, organised by Universities UK and the Higher Education Academy, brought together representatives from universities across the country to discuss how higher education institutions can create the conditions for excellent teaching, and how to combine innovation with educational standards and consistency in students' experience, particularly in the context of the forthcoming Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
Conference delegates heard from experts and thought leaders in the sector, with Prof. Wareing delivering a keynote on defining teaching excellence. In her presentation, Prof. Wareing used metaphors of deep and surface approaches to learning, to explore how organisational learning can result from the same conditions that make student learning possible. She also discussed the value of the higher education community using metrics as benchmarks to drive improvements rather than to fuel competition.
In its whole the conference addressed the current and future challenges facing the higher education sector, particularly in the context of the changing landscape and architecture instigated by HEFCE's proposed changes to quality assurance in the sector, and the Government's recent Green Paper for Higher Education.
