LSBU courses make UK top 5 in Guardian rankings

Three London South Bank University (LSBU) subjects have been named amongst the top five of UK universities in the Guardian University Guide 2026.

LSBU ranks top in the UK for Social Work, fourth for Forensic Science and fifth for Mechanical Engineering in the rankings, published on 13 September.

The latest rankings come after LSBU again secured its position for the third consecutive year for its graduates’ earning power. They are the highest paid of all London modern universities, one year, three and five years after graduating, according to Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data.

Central to this success is the opportunities students enjoy through the University’s CareerSmart programme. Mina Stojic, a recent Mechanical Engineering student, completed a placement year at Cummins Inc, a global leader in engine manufacturing. She worked as a design and analysis engineer on alternative fuel projects and performed structural and vibration analyses on diesel engine components.

“This year in industry truly gave me perspective into how the real engineering world works, what sort of teams there are and what sort of work they deal with. This insight significantly helped me in determining my next step and which industry I would like to work in after I completed my degree.”

Other high performers included Economics, which ranks 15 in the UK and topped the table of London modern universities.

Recent Economics graduates have secured placements and graduate positions at companies including Warner Brothers Discovery, BNP Paribas CIB, Hitachi Global and Venture Capital, in analysis and business consultant roles. The subject was also highly commended for Outstanding Support for Students in last year’s Times Higher Education Awards.

Game Design and Production, meanwhile, topped the London modern universities table, ranking an impressive eight in the UK.

“The thing I liked most about my course was the emphasis on actually creating games for our portfolio and the number of modules and game jams available to do. A complete portfolio of work in the exact field you want to get into was incredibly beneficial, in not only getting myself into the industry but understanding the lifecycle of game production,” said alumna Isabel Elia, who now works in Sweden as a Senior Project Coordinator for Ubisoft.

Ranked first of London modern universities and fourth in the UK, Forensic Science students train in specialist facilities, including a dedicated crime scene flat. They are taught by industry experts in fingerprints, DNA, explosives and fibres.
